Seton Hall Media Students to Attend National Conference
Monday, October 17th, 2022
Fifteen Seton Hall students will be attending the College Broadcaster Inc.'s National Student Electronic Media Convention in Baltimore, MD from October 26-29. Eleven WSOU 89.5 FM student managers and manager assistants will be attending the conference along with four Pirate TV producers. Select WSOU students will also be representing the radio station in various panels which take place during the convention.
The National Student Electric Media Convention is a gathering of student media outlets throughout the country. This convention features over 100 sessions for student broadcasting, leadership, and more. This year's event also marks the first time the conference is back in-person since 2019 when Seton Hall students attended the conference in St. Louis.
"I'm really excited to go to the CBI conference in Baltimore this year!" said Kayla Fonseca, a junior majoring in journalism and minoring in visual sound media. Fonseca is also the student station manager at WSOU. "Getting to interact with other college radio stations from around the country and being able to learn from them will be a great experience that I can take back to Seton Hall."
The five panels that WSOU will be a part of include:
• Covering Women's Sports in 2022 - hosted by WSOU's Sports Director Joe Matthews
and WSOU's Assistant Sports Director Jonathan Heite.
• College Radio: Navigating through a Post-Pandemic World – A panel discussion featuring
WSOU's Promotions Director Kristin Acheson and WSOU's Assistant Promotions Director
Ryan Sawyer
• Roundtable: Student Radio Program Directors - moderated by WSOU's Programming Director
Joey Nardone
• Working with your University Administration - A panel discussion featuring Joey
Nardone and WSOU's Music Director Patrick Ritter
• Roundtable: College Radio Music Directors - moderated by WSOU's Music Director Patrick
Ritter
Along with the panels, the final event of the conference is the National Student Production Award. WSOU is nominated in the "Best Special Broadcast" category for its coverage of the 2021 New Jersey gubernatorial election. This is the same piece that won the station a New York Press Club award in the "Political Coverage NYC Metro - Radio" category earlier this year.
Louie Pasculli is a junior visual sound and media student with a concentration in sports media. As the executive producer of Pirate TV, he is excited for the opportunity for himself and the organization to be able to attend this event. "This conference will be a great opportunity for us to learn a lot and improve the studio as a whole," he said. "I think only good things will come from this."

About Pirate Television (Pirate TV)
Pirate Television (Pirate TV) is the student-run and student-managed news station
of the College of Communication and the Arts and Seton Hall University. It is the only broadcast network on campus created by the students and for the students. Pirate TV provides students with first-hand experience in creating a professional-grade
news product on both sides of the camera.
Started in 1990, Pirate TV develops skills outside the classroom, preparing students to produce broadcast work in real-time. Pirate TV actively reports content every week. Monday through Wednesday, the station reports local and international news, weather and sports. On Thursdays, the station hosts Hall Talk, a panel discussion dedicated to Seton Hall sports.
Pirate TV is open to all students, regardless of major. After completing orientation, students learn the layout of the program and can specify which areas they would like to learn more about. Students can experience different positions, easily discovering their broadcast niche. For more information or if you'd like to get involved, contact William Pace at [email protected].
