CommArts Honor Society Launches Annual Book Drive to Benefit Newark School

Students in the College of Communication and the Arts' Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society are holding their second annual Children's Literacy Book Drive, benefiting the students of Martin Luther King Jr./13th Avenue School in Newark, NJ. These much-needed books will benefit students and teachers alike, providing a collection of library and classroom resources to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. After a successful first year in which the Seton Hall community generously donated over five hundred books to the Christ the Teacher School in Fort Lee, Lambda Pi Eta is looking to top that record in order to provide books to over six hundred and fifty disadvantaged students.

This year's goal of 700 has significant meaning – it would mean at least one book for every student in the school. Lambda Pi Eta faculty advisor and Journalism Instructor Ann Bollinger elaborated on just how crucial the Seton Hall community's donations are. "The MLK, Jr./ 13th Ave School is in dire need of books for their classrooms and library, and they happen to be our neighbor — just 10 minutes away. We'd like to thank our Seton Hall community for very generously donating last year, and we can't wait to see how we do this year."

When the drive is completed, honor society members will hand deliver the books to the school, where they will experience the impact of their service firsthand. Public Relations B.A./M.A. dual degree program student and Lambda Pi Eta President Zachary Nickl recently reflected on last year's drive, and is thrilled to once again provide an essential pastime to students in need. "We do this because of the look on the children's faces, the beaming smiles and the look of excitement at being able read a favorite book, or find a new favorite. Moments like that don't happen often, and it's an amazing opportunity to be a part of helping a child's life, even in a small way."

• Walsh Library - Lobby

All are encouraged to donate both used and new books for students in grades K-8.

Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Association's official honor society, with over five hundred chapters nationwide. The Seton Hall chapter strives to recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in Communication studies, while encouraging professional development.
