Inaugural Student Leader Information Night
Tuesday, November 7, 2023
On Monday, October 30th, five campus offices came together to host the first annual Student Leader Information Night, showcasing some of the top student leader positions for Seton Hall students. Representatives from the Center for Academic Success, the Dean of Students Office, the Office of Student Activities, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and Residence Life briefly highlighted the role and benefits of becoming a Peer Advisor, KNOW MORE and Dare to Care Peer Educator, Orientation Leader, member of Student Activities Board, Blue Crew, and Resident Assistant. Approximately 150 students attended.
The night began with a welcome from emcee, Winston Roberts, Assistant Vice President & Dean of Student Engagement. Roberts shared with the crowd that by becoming a student leader, individuals have the "unique opportunity to leave a lasting impression on campus." Many of the returning student leaders who volunteered at the event echoed this sentiment including Richard Picone, an Orientation Leader, who stated that 'being a student leader is not about the roles we assume, but rather the goals we have and the difference we make." Sasha Orozco reflected on her experience as a Resident Assistant stating that the student leader experience helped her, "find [her] place at Seton Hall," while also finding her "passions and drive."
Each office then shared their five-minute pitch on why a student should consider applying for their student leader position. Each pitch included the fundamental responsibility of each role:
Peer Advisor – assist students in acclimating to college life through individualized support as a part of the First Year Student Success Team.
KNOW MORE or Dare to Care Peer Educator – provide lifesaving education to make campus a safer and healthier place for students. KNOW MORE Peer Educators focus on alcohol and other drug education, sexual violence prevention, and bystander intervention while Dare to Care Peer Educators focus on suicide prevention, mental health awareness and wellbeing.
Orientation Leader – welcome new students and their families to the Seton Hall community during Pirate Adventure, Move-In Days, and Welcome Weekend.
Student Activities Board - plan and market large-scale and campus-wide events, such as Blue Day, campus concerts, and SHU Speaks, to create a memorable experience for the student community.
Blue Crew – assist in new student recruitment by conducting campus tours, greeting families interested in Seton Hall, co-presenting at admissions events, and participating in prospective student outreach.
Resident Assistant – build an inclusive, healthy, and safe residential community so that students feel Home at the Hall.
After hearing from each office, current student leaders participated in a fashion show depicting what to wear to an interview (business casual attire) and what not to wear to an interview (pajamas and mismatched Crocs). Information was also shared on how to access the Pirate’s Closet and resume and interview tips from The Career Center. The fashion show concluded with six student leaders proudly displaying their student leader uniform and some of the fun swag that comes with being in the role. Backpacks and bucket hats, anyone?
Following the formal presentation, students had the chance to visit a resource table from each department to learn more about the positions and respective application timelines. One current student leader, Ryan Duffy, a KNOW MORE Peer Educator, shared he was, "excited to see just how many [new] Pirates are excited to get involved and make a different in their community!"
Elliot J. Cavuto, a first-year student and prospective student leader who attended the event shared, "it was an inspiring and community-building event. I loved how even with the diversity of leadership positions there was a common theme of making our campus a better and happier place to grow and learn together."
