Introducing Kognito: Helping Faculty and Staff Respond to Students in Distress
Thursday, October 7, 2021
A nationwide study found that rates of moderate to severe anxiety and depression among college students increased significantly over the last few years. This trend was only exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19 upon students, 83% of whom said worsened mental health had a negative effect on their academics.
Students often confide in a trusted professor or staff member when they are feeling overwhelmed or even in crisis. Each of us can play a crucial role in supporting a troubled student. Knowing what do, how to respond, and how to effectively refer the student for help is key to creating a supportive campus environment.
We are excited to share with all Seton Hall faculty and staff a valuable resource to assist you in this area. Kognito – At Risk Mental for Faculty and Staff is a unique learning tool. The online module allows you to simulate conversations with students in realistic scenarios and receive feedback to build skills and confidence. You will learn how to have supportive conversations with students, to recognize students in distress, and most importantly how to effectively refer and connect students to appropriate resources for help. Just go to PirateNet and click on the Kognito chicklet to access the service.
The Kognito module is made possible through the Great Minds Dare to Care Grant. For more information, please visit our website or contact Karen Van Norman, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students.
