Sofia Carolina Diaz at the United Nations.
Seton Hall School of Diplomacy and International Relations alumna Sofia Carolina Diaz 25’ is building an international career at the heart of global policymaking.
She currently serves as an administrative consultant and advisor at the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations, where her role is dedicated to supporting the Mission of Uruguay and their leadership of the G77. In the role, she helps prepare meeting reports, briefings and statements while tracking key developments across the UN system.
Her day-to-day work spans a wide range of global issues, including climate change, multilateral ocean treaties and relating dialogues, AI governance, gender discrimination and digital security. The fast-paced role requires her to stay current on UN procedures, negotiations and reforms while supporting the Mission’s diplomatic priorities.
Her professional journey began at Seton Hall, where she combined academics with service, leadership and hands-on experience. As a student, she interned with the International Rescue Committee in New Jersey, supporting Cuban and Haitian migrant communities, and later interned at the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the UN — an opportunity she secured through persistence and outreach.
Outside the classroom, she was involved in work study, extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities, including as a JAULI Scholar, while also participating in programs such as the World Leaders Forum and the United Nations Field Seminar. She also began graduate studies at the Geneva Graduate Institute, expanding her international and academic experience even further.
She credits Seton Hall with helping prepare her for the demands of professional diplomacy by strengthening her discipline, work ethic and sense of community. Her advice to current and prospective Diplomacy students: diversify your experiences, build practical skills and take advantage of every opportunity to engage with different people, ideas and cultures.
For Diaz, diplomacy is not just something studied in the classroom — it is something that is lived through. It is also built through service, persistence and global engagement.
