2027 Undergraduate Summer Research Grant

The Lewinson Undergraduate Summer Research Grant will be awarded to a student and one faculty mentor to support research on a topic relevant to the mission of the Lewinson Center. The topic should be relevant to the study of labor, inequality, and social justice that cuts across various forms, including—but not limited to—class, race, labor, gender, sexuality, age, religion, nationality, disability and ideology. Proposals need not be relevant to the annual Lewinson Center theme.

The grant is not intended to fund a research assistant. Rather, it supports independent student research guided by the faculty member.

The student will be awarded a $4,500 stipend and a $500 travel budget.
The faculty mentor will receive a $3,000 stipend.

Guidelines

• This grant is for student-centered projects. Ideally, the research would lead to the student authoring a journal article or conference paper (or similar research product). At a minimum, it is expected that the student would do research that would legitimately justify being the first or second author on an article or paper. The grant is not intended to fund a research assistant.
• These grants cannot fund credit-bearing work and cannot be combined with other Seton Hall funding.
• Full-time faculty who are tenured or tenure-track and those who are faculty associates or lecturers in the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible to serve as supervisors.
• The grant research period begins on May 19, 2027, and ends on August 27, 2027. Students graduating in May of 2027 are not eligible since they would no longer be enrolled at Seton Hall University during the grant period.
• It is expected that the faculty mentor and student will work closely together over the course of the summer and will conduct research or its equivalent a minimum of three days a week.
• It is expected that students who are awarded the grant will subsequently submit proposals to present their work at the BIG EAST Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, Petersheim, and other external forums in the discipline where undergraduate research may be presented.

The prospective faculty mentor should complete the short application form by March 12, 2027. The faculty member will be asked to upload a letter of interest from the student. The application form can be found here.
