Lewinson Research Fellowship
2026 Research Fellowship Theme: Immigration
The Lewinson Center for the Study of Labor, Inequality, and Social Justice seeks applications from College of Arts and Sciences full-time faculty members for the Lewinson Research Fellowship (LRF).
The LRF provides a $2,500.00 stipend to pursue any research project relevant to the mission of the Lewinson Center and in accordance with the scholarship and activism of its namesake, the civil rights pioneer Edwin R. Lewinson. We encourage applications regarding this year’s theme, immigration, vis-à-vis labor, inequality and social justice; however, proposals on any topic relevant to the Lewinson Center will be given equal attention.
Research projects include work towards a peer-reviewed article, chapter contribution to an edited volume or monograph, and public scholarship, as well as (multi)media, art and/or creative projects intended for public viewing.
With an eye on the issues of our current day as well as our diverse histories, the Lewinson Center fosters conversation about labor, inequality, and injustice of many forms, including — but not limited to — class, race, labor, gender, sexuality, age, religion, nationality, disability and ideology.
The LRF will receive the $2,500 stipend during the Spring 2026 semester. Applicants are likewise expected to apply for the Office of the Provost's Scholarly Course Release Program for the 2026-2027 academic year, if available to them and applicable to their submission.
Application Deadline: November 10, 2025.
Decision Delivered: January 30, 2026.
Application Material: Applicants are to submit (1) their CV and (2) a research proposal (800-1000 words) explaining the details of the project and how it overlaps with the purview of the Lewinson Center and contributes to its mission. They must also provide specifics regarding relevant submission times/deadlines, publishers, venues and other relevant deliverables, events and/or activities. See below for additional details specific to proposal type.
For peer-reviewed manuscripts and chapter contributions: Applicants must advance research and scholarship to the point of completion and manuscript submission to a recognized scholarly journal, press, or other appropriate venue, depending on discipline.
For public scholarship: Applicants must complete work intended for broad audiences (e.g., op-eds, podcasts, community-based projects, or digital platforms) and provide evidence of planned or secured dissemination through reputable public venues (e.g., media outlets, civic organizations, or online forums). Proposals should outline the project’s potential to engage communities, influence discourse, or address inequities, with deliverables such as publication links, event schedules, or partner collaborations.
For media, art and creative projects: Applicants must submit plans to complete and present their work in a public venue, exhibition, or digital platform appropriate to the discipline, subject and/or theme, with clear plans for dissemination or public engagement and how it provides scholarly and social impact.
The Research Fellow will be required to submit a summary report, including relevant publication or public presentation status, by December 1, 2026. Succinct summaries will eventually be made public and honored on the Lewinson Center website.
All proposals will be reviewed by the Lewinson Center Advisory Board. For more information or inquiries, email the Director, Axel M. Oaks Takacs ([email protected]).
