Understanding Costs and Financial Aid
Get a clear picture of what to expect financially when studying abroad, from tuition and program fees to financial aid, scholarships, and additional expenses. Costs and payment structures vary across Spring Embedded, Summer Abroad, and Semester Abroad programs, so the information below breaks down what to expect for each program format. There is no financial commitment or cost to apply to any Seton Hall Study Abroad Program. Once you are approved, you can decide whether you wish to secure your spot by completing the Confirmation process as outlined in your Study Abroad Portal.
Spring Embedded Programs
Tuition Cost: For undergraduate students, Spring Embedded courses are included in your regular Spring
tuition if you are enrolled in 12 to 18 credits. There is no additional tuition charge
as long as your total Spring course load does not exceed 18 credits. If you enroll
in more than 18 undergraduate credits, you will be charged per credit at the rate
set by the Bursar. Graduate students pay per credit for the course, as they would
for any other Spring course.
Program Fee: In addition to tuition, both undergraduate and graduate students pay a separate Program
Fee that covers the travel components outlined on the program’s webpage. The Program
Fee is paid through the Study Abroad Portal and is divided into a non-refundable deposit
and a final balance.
Financial Aid: Financial aid is applied to your Spring term bill as it would be for any other Spring
course. However, financial aid cannot be used to directly reduce the Program Fee paid
through the Study Abroad Portal.
Study Abroad Scholarships: Students can pursue study abroad scholarships to help with the Program Fee. Seton
Hall Study Abroad Scholarships can be applied directly toward the Program Fee. Scholarships
from external providers are typically paid directly to the student and can therefore
help indirectly offset the cost of the Program Fee.
Non-Refundable Deposit and Financial Commitments: All students approved for a Spring Embedded Program are required to submit a $500
non-refundable deposit through the Study Abroad Portal to secure their spot. The deposit
is applied as a $500 credit toward the student's Program Fee. If a student withdraws
from the program after being confirmed, the $500 non-refundable deposit will not be
refunded. Once approved for your Spring Embedded Program, please review the Acknowledgment
Agreement in your Study Abroad Portal, which outlines the financial commitments and
obligations associated with confirming your participation in the program.
Non-Program Fee Expenses: In addition to the Program Fee, students should budget for personal expenses and any
travel costs not included in their specific program. Visit the Details tab of the
Spring Embedded Program you are interested in to see exactly what is and is not included
in the Program Fee, as inclusions vary by program. For example, many Spring Embedded
Programs include round-trip airfare, while the number of included group meals varies.
Students should also plan for independent expenses while abroad, such as meals, local
transportation, and personal purchases. If you have questions about what to budget
beyond the Program Fee, consult your Faculty Leader or the Study Abroad team for guidance
specific to your program.
Summer Abroad Programs
Tuition Cost: Summer Abroad tuition is charged per credit for both undergraduate and graduate students
because Summer courses are not included within a regular semester tuition package.
For Faculty-Led Summer Abroad Programs, both undergraduate and graduate students receive
a 25% discount on Seton Hall tuition for programs under one month and a 50% discount
for month-long programs. For Partner University Programs, these Faculty-Led Summer
Abroad tuition discounts do not apply, and students should review the individual program
webpage for specific tuition and course cost information.
Program Fee: For Faculty-Led Summer Abroad Programs, students pay a separate Program Fee that
covers the travel components and other program inclusions outlined on the program’s
webpage. The Program Fee is paid through the Study Abroad Portal and is divided into
a non-refundable deposit and a final balance. For Partner University Programs, the
payment structure and included costs vary by program, so students should review the
individual program webpage for specific cost and payment information.
Financial Aid: Financial aid is generally not available to cover Summer Abroad tuition or Program
Fees, as most financial aid is applied during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Study Abroad Scholarships: Students can pursue study abroad scholarships to help offset Summer Abroad costs.
Seton Hall Study Abroad Scholarships can be applied directly toward the Program Fee
of Faculty-Led Summer Abroad Programs. Scholarships from external providers are typically
paid directly to the student and can therefore help indirectly offset the overall
cost of participating in a Summer Abroad Program.
Non-Refundable Deposit and Financial Commitments: All students approved for a Summer Abroad Program are required to submit a $500 non-refundable
deposit through the Study Abroad Portal to secure their spot. The deposit is applied
as a $500 credit toward the student’s Program Fee for a Faculty-Led Program or toward
the student’s summer tuition bill for a Partner University Program. If a student withdraws
from the program after being confirmed, the $500 non-refundable deposit will not be
refunded. Once approved for your Summer Abroad Program, please review the Acknowledgment
Agreement in your Study Abroad Portal, which outlines the financial commitments and
obligations associated with confirming your participation in the program.
Non-Program Fee Expenses: Students should budget for personal expenses and any travel costs not included in
their specific Summer Abroad Program. Visit the Details tab of the program you are
interested in to see what is and is not included, as inclusions vary by program and
format. For example, Faculty-Led Programs may include round-trip airfare and some
group meals, while Partner University Programs may require students to arrange and
pay for items such as airfare or housing separately. Students should also plan for
independent meals, local transportation, personal purchases, and other expenses while
abroad. For questions about what to budget beyond the listed program costs, consult
your Faculty Leader for a Faculty-Led Program or the Study Abroad team for guidance
specific to your program.
Semester Abroad Programs
Tuition Cost: For all Seton Hall Semester Abroad Programs, students continue to pay tuition to
Seton Hall University at their existing tuition rate. All institutional scholarships
and financial aid remain applicable. Tuition is paid through PirateNet.
USAC Fees: For all USAC Semester Abroad Programs, Seton Hall University covers the USAC Program
Fee, as well as any fees associated with USAC credit-bearing courses and internships.
Students are responsible for the cost of any optional, non-credit-bearing tours or
excursions.
Study Abroad Scholarships: Seton Hall Study Abroad Scholarships are applied directly to the student’s tuition
bill for the Semester Abroad. Scholarships from external study abroad providers are
typically paid directly to the student and can therefore be used to help indirectly
offset Semester Abroad costs. USAC Scholarships are applied directly toward the student’s
housing costs for the Semester Abroad.
Housing Cost: Students pay housing costs directly to either USAC (University Studies Abroad Consortium)
or the host university’s affiliated housing, depending on the program for which they
are confirmed and the housing option they select.
University Fees: Students are required to pay the Seton Hall University Fee and the Technology Fee.
Students participating in the University Laptop Program must also pay the Mobile Computing
Fee unless they have already paid it for a total of four semesters. Students who are
not bringing their University-issued laptop abroad must return it to the Mobile Computing
Office if they have not yet fulfilled the four-semester Mobile Computing Fee requirement.
Non-Refundable Deposit and Financial Commitments: All students approved for a Semester Abroad Program are required to submit a $500
non-refundable deposit through the Study Abroad Portal to secure their nomination.
The deposit is applied as a $500 credit toward the student's Seton Hall tuition bill
for the semester abroad. If a student withdraws from the program after being nominated
to the host campus, the $500 tuition credit will be removed from their tuition bill,
and the non-refundable deposit will not be refunded. Once approved for your Semester
Abroad Program, please review the Acknowledgment Agreement in your Study Abroad Portal,
which outlines the financial commitments and obligations associated with confirming
your participation in the program.
Non-Program Fee Expenses: Students should budget for personal expenses and other costs not covered by their
Semester Abroad tuition or housing costs. Visit your Semester Abroad Program’s country
page to see what is and is not included, as costs and inclusions vary by campus. Students
should typically plan for expenses such as round-trip airfare, meals, local transportation,
visa and immigration costs, personal purchases, and independent travel. For questions
about what to budget beyond the listed program costs, consult the Study Abroad team
for guidance specific to your destination. If you are participating in a USAC program,
you can also reach out to your USAC Advisor and use the interactive budget sheet,
which can be found in the fees section of each USAC program page, as well as in your
USAC account once you have applied.
