WSOU Student Broadcasters recently attended the 2022 National Student Media Electronic Convention held by the College Broadcasters, Inc. John Makuch ’23 (sixth from left) and Ryan Henry ’24 (seventh from left) were recognized for their coverage of the 2021 NJ Gubernational Election.

Station WSOU 89.5FM won three awards during the month of October for their outstanding broadcasts over the past year by the College Media Association and the College Broadcasters, Inc., including a first-place finish.

WSOU's Veronica Gail '22 won first place in the "Best Audio Newscast" category of the College Media Association "Pinnacle" Awards, recognizing excellence in writing, news judgment and objectivity in reporting, production quality and innovative use of audio in newscasting. WSOU won third place in the "Best Audio Special Event Coverage" category for audio story on the protests at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, by Christian Gardner '22 and John Makuch '23. That category recognizes excellence in audio coverage of a special event, including writing, news judgment and objectivity in reporting, production quality and innovative use of audio/video in newscasting.

Gail served as the WSOU news director in the 2021-22 academic year, with Gardner and Makuch as news assistants. Makuch now currently serves as the news director of WSOU.

In June, Ryan Henry '24, Veronica Gail '22 and John Makuch '23 (left to right) received the New York Press Club award for WSOU's coverage of the 2021 NJ Gubernational Election.

At this year's National Student Media Electronic Convention by the College Broadcasters, Inc., WSOU won fourth place in the "Best Audio Special Broadcast" category for its coverage of the 2021 New Jersey Gubernatorial Election. The students involved were Gail, Gardner, Makuch, Dylan Hunt '22 and Ryan Henry '24. Henry currently is the staff representative of WSOU. The category was judged based on creativity, writing, editing, delivery, presentation, and use of audio for a locally originated stand—alone audio program. WSOU also won a New York Press Club award for their coverage of the 2021 New Jersey Gubernational Election back in June.
