Vaccinations Widely Available, Survey Results, Return to Work  

The week has been filled with great news. Public health statistics are moving in very positive and encouraging ways. Significant vaccination efforts are having their effect. Both President Biden and Governor Murphy have set goals of having 70% of (U.S., N.J.) adults vaccinated by July.

As a result of the positive statistical trend, Governor Murphy announced the easing of several restrictions. This affects capacity levels, gatherings, catering, religious and social events, and school prom and graduation ceremonies. However, Murphy noted that the CDC guidance regarding 6 foot "social distancing" between unaffiliated individuals remains in place.

"With COVID-19 cases on the decline, more than 7 million vaccines administered and the good weather allowing more outdoor activities, we are able to take these steps to reopen the state," said Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli. "But, we can't let our guard down now. Please get vaccinated if you haven't already, practice physical distancing and wear a mask when in large crowds.''

The CDC also reminds us that the pandemic is not over and says fully vaccinated people should continue to take precautions in indoor public settings like wearing a well-fitted mask.

The HICT is reviewing this updated guidance. We will adjust our policies accordingly, deploying CDC guidance in our planning and actions. Please keep in mind we must also comply with State of New Jersey regulations. We are closely monitoring evolving State of NJ guidance and remain in regular contact with State and local health officials.

Better days are ahead. But they are not here yet. Please continue to do your part. Do not let your guard down. Do not fall victim to pandemic fatigue. Follow the Seton Hall Pledge, whether you are fully vaccinated or not.

Vaccinations Widely Available; "Walk-Ins" Encouraged; Benefits to Being Vaccinated

There are numerous benefits to getting vaccinated. We strongly encourage you to get vaccinated - for yourselves and all those around you.

Getting vaccinated for COVID-19 is easier now more than ever. Essex County Executive DiVincenzo announced walk-up vaccination is now available; RiteAid is offering vaccinations; CVS Health is providing walk-in vaccinations at all 324 N.J. locations; All 6 New Jersey mega sites are offering walk in vaccinations.

Survey Results Encouraging; Your Participation is Appreciated

We reported last week about the results of our vaccination survey. We are tremendously grateful to all who participated.

Importantly, we are highly encouraged to see such a high proportion of our students (62%), faculty (90%) and staff/administrators (83%) report having received at least one dose of any vaccine. Overall, 44% of respondents report being fully vaccinated; while a small percentage (students 10%, faculty 3.3%, staff/administrators 6.6%) report they do not plan to get vaccinated. We believe a very high level of vaccination among our community members will better enable us to move to higher density and a primarily in-person living and learning environment this fall.

We value your insights and will continue to engage with you on this topic. We continue to gather more information to assist in planning and preparation, helping us update our Restart Plan, originally submitted in July 2020 and confirmed by the State of New Jersey. Your health and safety remain paramount in our planning and actions.

Return to Work

The Governor's loosening of restrictions and the growing return of many social, religious, and economic activities is a welcome sight. Similarly, we are developing Return to Work plans as we prepare for a primarily in-person fall semester with the appropriate health and safety measures in place. More guidance will be forthcoming.

The State Department of Health provides a full array of vaccine and vaccination-related information, some of it in multiple languages. Please check it out and share it with those you know who have concerns about being vaccinated.
