Students Transition to Remote Learning

Dear Students,

As classes transition from in-person to online, you are still entitled to full access. Accommodations you used in your in-person classes might look different or, in some cases, may not be necessary now, but you should expect full access. For example:

  •  If you use extended test time, online test platforms can be set to provide you the extra time. If you use technology to read print, it should be compatible with materials posted for your classes.
  •  If you use interpreting or captioning, you should expect all audio and video material to be captioned.

If you have concerns about access during this transition, please be in touch. We can discuss existing accommodations and any other accommodations you feel will be necessary in online classes. We are working with administrators, technology staff, and faculty to ensure the transition is as seamless for you as possible.

For students on our South Orange and IHS campuses: We encourage you to reach out to your professors to remind them of your testing accommodations several days prior to taking any online exams or quizzes.  Below is a template for reaching out to your professor to ensure your testing accommodations are available in the online format. Please let us know if you need any assistance and feel free to cc us at DSS on those emails if you would like.

Dear Professor Smith,

I am a student in your Introduction to Psychology course on Tuesdays at 1:00pm. I wanted to reach out to remind you that I am eligible to receive extended time (1.5x) on my quizzes and exams.  Attached is a copy of my accommodation letter that I provided to you earlier in the semester.  Can you please set my extended time for our upcoming Canvas quizzes and exams?  I would really appreciate it.  Please let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else you need for coordinating this accommodation. I have cc'ed the DSS staff that I work closely with on this email. Thank you kindly for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Susie

Even though the DSS staff is working remotely, we are still here to support you! We are available for appointments via Microsoft Teams or by phone. Additionally, we will soon be sharing with you some tips for managing online classes. Please let us know what we need and how we can support you.

Sincerely,
DSS Staff
