Pirate Career Plan: Accounting

Year One: Discover

Fall Semester:

  • Attend a Resume Workshop. Come to annual “Fall Career Fair” and “Meet the Firms” Networking Event.
  • Join the Accounting Club and attend meetings.
  • Participate in community service activities related to your interests.


Spring Semester:

  • Schedule an appointment with your Career Advisor to develop a college resume and discuss your career path.
  • Participate in annual “Spring Roundtable in Public Accounting” to meet professionals in the field.
  • Attend annual “Spring Career Fair” to line up a summer internship.
  • Use Navigator to find internships, volunteer opportunities, and parttime/summer jobs.

Year Two: Investigate

Fall Semester:

  • Meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss program plan to earn 150 credits.
  • Schedule an appointment with your Career Advisor and update your resume.
  • Attend annual “Fall Career Fair” and “Meet the Firms” Networking Event.
  • Apply to Beta Alpha Psi (requires a 3.0 GPA) and attend weekly meetings.
  • Sign up for an Interview Skills workshop.
  • Create a LinkedIn profile and identify SHU alumni (Pirate Mentors) to expand your network.


Spring Semester:

  • Participate in OCI to apply for Summer Leadership Programs.
  • Interview 3 people you know or SHU alumni (including Pirate Mentors) to learn about their Accounting careers.

Year Three: Experience

  • Create a cover letter and update your resume with your Career Advisor to add internships and other experiences.
  • Participate in Fall OCI to apply for Winter and Summer internships.
  • Attend annual “Fall Career Fair” and “Meet the Firms” Networking Event.
  • Develop a networking contact list.
  • Schedule informational interviews with people you meet during your internships and networking events.


Transfer Students

  • Schedule an appointment with your Career Advisor to create/update your resume, and learn how to use Navigator.
  • Inquire about Fall OCI and applying for Winter and Summer internships.
  • Contact the Transfer Center to help you acclimate to the SHU community.

Year Four: Take Action

(**and 5th year for MA program)

  • Meet with your Career Advisor to discuss job search strategies.
  • Sign up for Fall Practice Interview Day to prepare for Fall OCI.
  • Participate in Fall OCI to apply for full time jobs.
  • Attend annual “Fall Career Fair” and “Meet the Firms” Networking Event to connect with hiring companies.
  • Upload your resume in the “Accounting, Economics, Finance and Math” Resume Book in Navigator.
  • Attend CPA Exam Session with NJCPA to learn important information about the application process.
  • Create a list of targeted companies and use LinkedIn to network with SHU alumni.
  • Use Navigator and other industry websites to apply for professional jobs.
