Wednesday, November 18, 2020
On Saturday, November 7 at 10 a.m., 92 community members gathered virtually for the Office of Student Engagement's Annual Student Leadership Conference- Inspiration to Impact.
This year's conference was open to undergraduate and graduate students and meant to inspire action and encouragement to think critically about servant leadership and global citizenship. The unique half-day, virtual conference experience showcased several diverse speakers that shared their stories on inclusive leadership and inspired attendees to take action.
Conference participants were encouraged to stay connected and follow the handle @hallstudents using the hashtag #SHULeads on social media. Participants also had access to the IMPACT Student Leadership Spotify Playlist and were encouraged to engage in topics and the breakout sessions through the MS Teams Chat function.
Speakers and topics included:
- 'How to Lead Inclusively'- Dr. Shawna Cooper-Gibson, VPSS
- 'Imposter Syndrome: An Act of Leadership,' – Janisha Romero-Rodriguez
- 'One Man's Survival Story,' – Forrest Pritchett
- 'Creating Space'- Carina Castagna
- 'His/Her/Theirs: Pronouns and Why They Matter'- Carter Bryant
- 'Don't PANIC!'- Brandon Larmore
Ten students, faculty, and administrators also served as small group facilitators for student breakout sessions.
A follow-up post-assessment survey was sent to conference participants. Of the participants, 71% responded to the survey. 88% of respondents noted this was their first time attending the IMPACT Leadership Conference, and 96% agreed the conference met their expectations. 88% agreed they left the conference feeling inspired and motivated, while 86% felt the content was relevant and informative.
Conference participants shared the following responses:
- 'The conference was very eye-opening and interactive. I really appreciated people sharing their personal experiences as it showed the importance of inclusiveness from many different perspectives.'
- 'The speakers had so much knowledge to give to us! It was on diverse topics that I never really heard of. It was refreshing.'
- 'Most satisfying and enriching was definitely the breakout session because we were able to open up and talk with each other about inclusive leadership and topics outside of that.'
