Healthcare Bootcamp Prepares Students for Success

Healthcare Professions Major Bootcamp Students

Incoming students gather for Seton Hall’s first-ever Healthcare Professions Major Bootcamp.

Seton Hall University’s College of Nursing, in collaboration with the School of Health and Medical Sciences, welcomed incoming first-year students in nursing and the health professions to the first annual Healthcare Professions Major Bootcamp, held August 4–7 at the Interprofessional Health Sciences (IHS) campus in Nutley, NJ.

Funded by the Office of the Provost as part of the University’s Academies Initiative, the bootcamp offered new students an immersive introduction to their coursework and their future fields.

Over four days, students engaged in academic enrichment, interprofessional collaboration and career exploration, which was designed to lay a strong foundation for success in the University’s rigorous undergraduate majors: the B.S. in Nursing and 3+3 Dual Degree programs in Physical Therapy (B.S./D.P.T.) and Physician Assistant (B.S./M.S. in P.A.)

"This program is a reflection of Seton Hall’s commitment to innovative, student-centered education," said Associate Dean Elizabeth McDermott, Ph.D. "By bringing together our undergraduates early in their academic journey, we are fostering a collaborative mindset that mirrors the interprofessional nature of health care."

Students built academic and collaboration skills throughout the four-day event.

Throughout the week, incoming students attended a biology review course led by Seton Hall faculty to help them prepare for the challenging science curriculum that comprises each of their respective programs. Seton Hall’s Academic Resource Center facilitated interactive workshops focused on academic skills including time management, study strategies and test-taking techniques.

Students also heard from alumni and current students who shared insights on navigating Seton Hall’s curriculum and making the most of their academic journey.

Beyond the classroom, Bootcamp students took part in community-building events to help them connect with their peers, faculty and Seton Hall alumni in health care. A highlight of the week included a visit to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Wayne, where students toured the facility with hospital leadership and had the opportunity to interact with clinicians in their future professions.

For Roselynn A. Lopez-Erazo, an incoming B.S. in Nursing student, the group’s discussion with the hospital’s director of nurses was particularly memorable. “It reminded me of my mission to become a bilingual nurse — to advocate for those who are often overlooked because they don’t speak English,” she said.

The final day consisted of students participating in CPR instruction and a CPR race led by the IHS Simulation team. This hands-on session not only introduced students to the cutting-edge simulation tools available at Seton Hall but also gave them a meaningful glimpse into the world of health care.
