OSE's Annual IMPACT Conference
Tuesday, October 31, 2023
On Friday, October 20th, the Office of Student Engagement saw the return of its in-person Inspiration to IMPACT Student Leadership Conference. After holding the conference in a virtual setting for the past few years, this year’s IMPACT Conference returned to its original format and schedule and saw attendance of over 100 student leaders. Attendees represented a wide range of student populations, including clubs and organizations, student activities, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Buccino Leadership Institute, Housing and Residence Life, and the Center for Academic Success.
Each year, the IMPACT Conference highlights areas of leadership development that the members of the university deem important for our student leaders. Students attend various breakout sessions in the morning before a keynote address in the afternoon. This year, Dean Winston Roberts, Associate Vice President of Student Services and Dean of Student Engagement, welcomed attendees with an inspiring talk about the importance of student leaders before releasing them to the morning’s education sessions. Students were able to choose from a variety of education sessions to attend in the morning, allowing attendees to personalize their conference experience to their own leadership journeys. These sessions brought together students and administrators from across campus who presented on topics such as conflict management, marketing leadership experiences, and giving and receiving feedback, among others.
Here is the full list of education speakers:
Dean Elizabeth Halpin, Vice Dean of Continuing Education, spoke on managing conflict
for student leaders. Student Government Association President, Kai Hanson, presented on effective availability and highlighted ways for
leaders to be there for their students. Winston Roberts, Assistant Vice President
for Student Services and Dean of Student Engagement, spoke on progressive masculinity. Assistant Dean
of Students, Anthony Turon, highlighted virtues of leadership and how students can
use them to impact the world around them. Dennis (DJ) Schuck, Assistant Director of
Housing and Residence Life, covered ways to give and receive constructive feedback.
Representatives from the Office of Alumni Engagement and Philanthropy hosted a session
called "Adulting 101" where they covered tips, tricks, and advice for students to
take with them after graduation. Student leader, Mary Tiffin, President of Seton Hall’s
Model United Nations Association led a discussion on the importance of belonging and
how student leaders can promote belonging in their organizations. Finally, Kendra
Sherman, Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life, hosted an interactive session
about marketing leadership experiences for resumes and interviews.
After a morning of education sessions, students had the opportunity to interact and network during what the Office of Student Engagement called, the Lunch Power Hour. In addition to lunch, there were representatives from the Career Center and the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE). The Career Center answered questions about resumes and even let students practice on the virtual reality mock-interview technology. DOVE hosted a service project where students could help make snack packs for food insecure children to highlight servant leadership on campus. One of the most popular aspects of the Lunch Power Hour was the inclusion of therapy animals which served as a reminder about the importance of good mental health and wellness for all types of leaders.
Brandon Larmore, Director of the RISE Program at Seton Hall, was the keynote speaker of the IMPACT Conference. Making the keynote address interactive, Brandon highlighted the various ways students can make an impact on each other and the Seton Hall community, and emphasized why it is so important to leave an impact.
The Office of Student Engagement wants to thank all those who participated in the event, whether it was as an attendee, a speaker, or as a campus partner. The IMPACT Conference is just one of the many leadership development opportunities that the office hosts, and Student Engagement looks forward to future leadership development programming and connecting further with our student leaders.
