Thursday, November 5, 2020
On November 4, 2020, at 5:30 p.m., Student Services partnered with the Center for Faculty Development to host a virtual post-election event, "Communication Strategies for Productive Dialogue and Conflict Resolution" on Microsoft Teams Live.
Ms. Yolanda Jackson, a doctoral student in College of Education & Human Services, moderated the session and panelists included Prof. Angela Kotsonis (Instructor, College of Communication and the Arts), Dr. Mary Kelly (Staff Psychologist, Counseling & Psychological Services), Dr. Juan Rios (Asst. Professor and Director, Social Work Program), and Ms. Julia Nicolls (President, Student Government Association).
The event focused on ways community members can come to terms with each other during difficult conversations and agree to disagree with respect and civility. Panel members provided several strategies to encourage product dialogue and resolve conflicts.
This event was the second session in a three-part series regarding the 2020 election. The first session took place on October 27 called "Classroom Culture in An Election Year" that focused on how election stress can impact teaching and the learning environment. The October 27 discussion was moderated by Dr. Mary Balkun (Director, Faculty Development) and panelists included Ms. Kaitlin Kehnemuyi (Asst. Professor, University Library), Dr. W. King Mott (Assoc. Professor, Political Science and Public Affairs), and Ms. Emma Murphy (Graduate Student- College of Education & Human Services).
The last session of the three-part series called "2020 Presidential Election Recap," will be sponsored by members of the Phi Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity on November 9 at 7 p.m. Panelists will include students, professors, Dr. Sunny Ho (Staff Psychologist, Counseling & Psychological Services) and Ms. Jessica Snell (Asst. Director, Student Leadership). Click here to join the event.
We invite students to participate in continued dialogue this Saturday, November 7 during our Inspiration to IMPACT Conference - our topic this year is Inclusive Leadership.
