ELC Members Volunteer to Help the New Generation of Scientists
Monday, February 1, 2016
The Éxito Leadership Club (ELC) at the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute and the Science Department have joined forces to teach STEM related courses to high school students of North Star Academy in Newark. The ten members of the ELC meet with North Star students every Friday on campus during the Spring 2016 semester.
This volunteer program covers different scientific disciplines. Students from North Star are assigned different professors at Seton Hall from January 15th to April 1st. Students attend classes every Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and work side by side with professors on STEM related projects that will be presented at the Petersheim Academic Exposition in April 2016.
Exito Leadership Club members are helping students acclimate to the scientific procedures and policy of the Seton Hall Science Department. North Star high schoolers participate in different courses which include: Effects of Alcoholic Beverages, Research In Human Memory, Mass Ejections from the Sun, Reconstructing Environments of Human Evolution, and Ethics and Genetic Engineering.
Sophomore Kristal Corona, an International Relations and Diplomacy major, is one of the ELC members volunteering to give North Star students an enhanced learning experience on behavioral science. Corona, alongside the high school students, is conducting an experiment studying the behaviors of a rat family. A new rat will then be introduced to the family and the students will record how the original family interacts and reacts to the new rat. After this experiment they will test the rats interaction concluding their research on behavioral science.
Kristal is excited about her opportunity to teach. Corona said, “I think it is a wonderful thing what Seton Hall is doing. It gives high school students the experience of working with professionals in the field. I am just happy to be a part of it, everyone in my group are girls so I think it's neat we are introducing behavioral science to a field which is male dominated”.
The Exito Leadership Club is a leadership development program established by the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute. The educational goals of this program are to mentor, guide and develop participants to become professional and community leaders. This exclusive society is comprised of no more than 10 students per academic year who have the privilege to participate in career mentoring, leadership dinners, volunteering and exclusive VIP access. Students are chosen through a selective process and are asked to sign a commitment agreement.
