Friday, April 7, 2017
The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute is partnering with the Department of History, the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program, and the Petersheim Academic Exposition to host a lecture presented by ethnomusicologist Philip Galinsky on Wednesday, April 19th.
Percussionist and ethnomusicologist Philip Galinsky, Ph.D. founded Samba New York! in 2003. As Director, he began teaching samba percussion classes to the general public in April 2003, leading to the formation of "Bateria" — a student-based ensemble of up to 40 or more percussionists that performs in numerous parades and large-scale events throughout the City. Now comprising NYC's largest, most talented, and highly trained team of samba musicians, dancers, and Capoeira artists, his "Show Group" has performed for some of the world's most prestigious companies, venues, and mass media.
An internationally recognized samba institution, Samba New York! has helped to change the culture in New York City and beyond with highly-acclaimed classes, workshops, and shows that educate, inspire, and uplift countless people of all backgrounds with the joyful music and dance of Brazil.
The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute invites you to join us for this fun celebration of Brazilian culture which will be held on Wednesday, April 19th 2017, 12:30-1:45pm in Stafford Hall, Rm 110.
