Welcome to the Faculty Resource Hub — a curated collection of theoretical frameworks,
standards, templates, and ready-to-use materials to support the design, implementation,
and evaluation of interprofessional education (IPE) and simulation (SIM) learning
experiences.
Resources are organized by topic and require university login to access each link via SharePoint.
- 1. Frameworks & Best Practice Guidelines »
This section brings together the foundational documents that inform the design of
interprofessional learning experiences. Here you will find the IPEC Core Competencies
(link) and the WHO Rehabilitation Competency Framework (link), along with simulation-based
practice guidelines (link) that together provide the theoretical grounding for every
IPE and SIM activity in this hub.
- 2. SIM Resources »
This section gathers the resources that will guide you through the design and implementation
of a simulation experience, from professional standards to validated outcome measures.
It includes:
- Health Professions Standards: Each SHMS health profession's code of ethics and discipline-specific SIM best practice
standards, which are expected to guide the conduct of any IPE or SIM educational activity.
- SIM Best Practice Standards: Key healthcare simulation standards covering SIM design, SIM IPE design, general operations,
facilitation, prebriefing, debriefing, evaluation of learning, and professional integrity.
This folder also includes a SIM dictionary, a valuable tool for promoting shared terminology
among facilitators and learners.
- SIM Consensus Statements: Two landmark papers: the global consensus statement on simulation-based practice in
healthcare and the joint position statement on simulation-based education in emergency
medical services training. Both are cornerstones for recognizing the value of simulation-based
education in health care.
- Standardized Patient Standards: The Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practice.
- Validated SIM Outcome Measures: Two folders with links to core SIM validated tools currently utilized at SHMS: the
Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (DASH-IV Short Form) and the Simulation
Effectiveness Tool – Modified (SET-M).
- 3. Case Development Resources »
This section provides everything you need to design and develop IPE SIM case scenarios,
including a fully developed multistage case scenario with materials for standardized
patients (SPs), faculty, and students that can be integrated into the PT, OT, AT,
SLP, and PA curricula.
- IPE SIM Case Scenarios: A series of scenarios that follow a patient and parent across different stages of
rehabilitation. Each scenario can be used on its own or combined into a multistage
IPE SIM experience. Together, they target the competencies of the WHO RCF Practice
Domain, with emphasis on patient-centered care, communication, and problem solving.
- Avatar Case Development Templates: A guide to help faculty teams develop interprofessional case scenarios that are pedagogically
purposeful, clinically authentic, and well suited to avatar-based virtual reality
delivery, paired with a template that gives faculty a clear structure for designing
meaningful avatar and SP interactions while maintaining pedagogical rigor.
- SIM Templates: Three core templates that standardize the information required to develop a SIM scenario:
a SIM Standardized Patient template, a SIM Student template, and a SIM Map. Together
they give faculty a clear structure for designing meaningful SIM learning experiences.
- 4. IPE Assessment & Evaluation Tools »
This section houses the core instruments selected to measure the competencies of the
Practice Domain: patient-centered care, collaboration, communication, problem solving,
decision making, and scope of practice.
- Metrics Master Map: A table that matches each instrument to the competency it evaluates, offers a glimpse
of its psychometric characteristics, and links to a PDF of the instrument itself.
Each instrument is identified as either student self-assessed or proxy-evaluated (observed
by an SP or faculty member).

5. VR & Avatar Simulation Repository
This repository offers two ways to bring avatar-based simulation into your teaching:
direct access to fully developed, ready-to-use avatar experiences, or the option to
build your own around your course's learning objectives.
- Ready-to-Use Avatar Experiences: Avatar experiences designed for the IPE curriculum, previously developed and matched
to specific learning objectives and IPE experiences that promote predetermined target
competencies (link to ready-to-use avatar experiences).
- Create Your Own Avatar Experience: A series of avatars you can configure around your learning objectives and the characteristics
of the case you want to portray (e.g., diagnosis, environmental context, competencies
to elicit).
