WSOU 89.5FM Receives 12 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Award Nominations

WSOU 89.5 FM has been nominated for 12 awards by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. The nominations come on the heels of the station's three award wins in October from the College Media Association and the College Broadcasters, Inc.
The nominations include:
- Best Celebrity or Artist/Band Interview: Patrick Ritter - Frank Bello Interview
- Best Newscast: Kayla Fonseca
- Best News Feature Story: Veronica Gail, Christian Gardner, John Makuch - Liberty State Park Protest
- Best Political News: Veronica Gail, Christian Gardner, Dylan Hunt, John Makuch, Ryan Henry - 2021 Election Coverage
- Best Website: Joe Walls, Sam Klein, Elijah Mustafa - wsou.net
- Best Social Media Campaign: Mary Ortel, Meghan Kelly, Jackson Shank - @wsou on Instagram
- Best Sports Play-by-Play (Men's Basketball): Jorie Mickens & Heaven Hill - MBB vs. Rutgers
- Best Sports Play-by-Play (Baseball/Softball): John Makuch & Victor Gonzalez - Softball vs. DePaul
- Best Sports Pre/Post Game: Heaven Hill & Jorie Mickens - WBB vs. Creighton Big East Tournament Post-Game
- Best Student Station Manager, Radio: Kayla Fonseca
- Best Promotions Director, Radio: Kristin Acheson
- Best Sports Director, Radio: Joe Matthews
WSOU Station Manager, Kayla Fonseca, expressed her excitement about the station's nominations. "We're grateful to be nominated among other great college stations and can't wait to attend the conference in February!"
The 2022 IBS Awards will be held live at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System's annual conference on February 24-25, 2023 at the Sheraton Times Square. Since its inception in 1940, "IBS has supported high school and college student media in all areas of operation through educational opportunities, being a voice in Washington DC for the best interests of student media, and by honoring the works of students and stations across the globe."
Ryan Hudes, Ph.D., the Associate Dean of Strategy, Enrollment & Administration for the College of Communication and the Arts, noted WSOU's continued achievement and the College's enthusiasm for these new nominations. "CommArts is thrilled to be the home to WSOU 89.5 FM. The recent acknowledgements by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System underscore the superior activities of our dedicated students and professional staff. We look forward to the annual conference in the new year and for the opportunity to continue sharing the strengths of our students and station."
On air for over 70 years, WSOU is a highly regarded and nationally recognized radio station honored with numerous collegiate and industry accolades over the years. In 2018, WSOU was inducted into the Radio Rock Hall of Fame and in 2016 was a recipient of the National Broadcasters Association's Marconi Award for Non-Commercial Radio Station of the Year. The station has also been named one of the Top 5 Rock Radio Stations in the Country by Rolling Stone magazine and selected multiple times for CMJ College Station of the Year, in addition to receiving a Peabody Award and being recognized for Best Sports Play-by-Play from the National Student Production Awards and Garden State Journalists Association.
