New M.A.E. in Elementary Teaching Program Prepares Future Educators for New Jersey Classrooms
Wednesday, October 15, 2025
The College of Human Development, Culture, and Media has introduced a new Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.) in Elementary Teaching program, designed to prepare individuals for New Jersey K–6 teacher certification
while earning a master’s degree. The 36-credit program offers a flexible, blended
learning format for working professionals and career changers seeking a direct path
into K-6 classrooms.
Highlights of the program include a comprehensive foundation in child and adolescent development, curriculum design and effective instructional strategies for literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. Students also take specialized courses in serving diverse learners and inclusive teaching practices, ensuring they are well prepared to meet the needs of today’s classrooms.
“Our students develop the knowledge, skills and practical experience needed to confidently lead a classroom and inspire young learners,” said Lauren McFadden, Ed.D., program director for the M.A.E. in Elementary Teaching program. “This program is designed for people who are ready to make a meaningful difference.”
Seton Hall’s fast-paced M.A.E. promotes collaboration and community among students, while maintaining small class sizes for personalized faculty advisement. Coursework is delivered through a blended format of online and in-person learning, combining flexibility with meaningful, hands-on experience.
A key component of the program is its two-semester clinical practice experience, which allows students to gain real-world experience under the mentorship of practicing educators. As part of New Jersey’s commitment to increasing pathways to educator preparation programs, paraprofessionals working in schools may be eligible to apply current work responsibilities toward the required clinical practice, in accordance with New Jersey Department of Education policies.
“This master’s degree program is also an appealing option for those seeking a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) in K-6 Instruction,” said McFadden. “The M.A.E. includes only three additional credits beyond the CEAS requirements, yet offers the advantages of matriculated student status, including eligibility for scholarships and financial aid.”
Graduates of the M.A.E. in Elementary Teaching program will be eligible for nomination to the New Jersey Department of Education for certification as elementary school teachers. Applications are currently being accepted for its first cohort in Spring 2026.
