International Student Spotlight on Amber Huang  

This edition of student spotlight introduces Ms. Amber Huang, a full-time student attending classes in the ESL@SetonHall intensive English program on campus. Amber is originally from Taiwan and has been studying with the ESL@SetonHall program for two years now. Amber responded by email to a series of interview questions. Here is her story.

What were you doing in your home country prior to joining the ESL program at Seton Hall University?

I was studying in the Department of Information Technology and Communication at the university. During my studies I found that this was not my ambition, so after graduation I chose to be a simple and busy office worker.

What led you to choosing Seton Hall's ESL intensive English program?

I guess the first thing I thought about was the location. Seton Hall is not too far from where my family lives. Then there is the tuition fee. After collecting information, I found that the tuition fee of Seton Hall is not expensive and the campus is super beautiful, so it is very attractive to me!

What have you been learning in the classes? Has there been a favorite assignment?

I learned courage in class. The teacher always gives you confidence and encouragement to speak English bravely. In addition, learning grammar when your grammar is wrong -- the teacher will correct you each time. I like the speaking class the most. In the process of speaking, you can learn English naturally by sharing stories. I am very happy that I can study English here because the teachers and classmates are very friendly, and everyone helps me a lot!

What are you plans after completing the ESL@SetonHall program?

I plan to continue to live and experience American culture in America. I still have a lot of places I haven't been to so I'm planning a road trip! To me the 50 states in the US are like different countries so I would love to visit each one of them.

The academic-based ESL@SetonHall intensive English program prepares individuals for success in postsecondary undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. During morning coursework, students study reading, writing, listening, and speaking using academic materials. During afternoon coursework, students select from a range of elective classes including TOEFL Preparation, Digital Media Publishing, Pronunciation Skills, among others.
