Intensive English Program Students Enjoy Walking Tour of Historic South Orange Campus - Seton Hall University

On Friday September 10th, a group of Seton Hall students participated in a special walking tour focused on the campus's historic buildings. The event was organized by the ESL@SetonHall intensive English program as part of the Student Fridays programming calendar for the fall 2021 semester. The students attending the tour are enrolled in the ESL@SetonHall intensive English program and represent multiple nations: Mexico, Spain, Brazil, China, Turkey, and China.

The walking tour event was launched by the Office of the Provost with a brief welcome address. For about an hour, the student group walked around campus exploring the unique histories of key campus buildings, including Presidents Hall, Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Stafford Hall, Marshall Hall, Walsh Library, among others. In some buildings, the student group was led inside to see historical artifacts such as the stained glass window depicting St Elizabeth Ann Seton (Presidents Hall); the memorial plaque to Benny Savage (Chapel of the Immaculate Conception); and the contents of a 1950s time capsule (Science and Technology Center). The tour event was livestreamed on social media with the volunteer help of a student photographer.

Friday's event followed the tour guidebook associated with the annual Charter Week celebration. The tour guidebook is edited by Dr. Bryan Meadows (EDST) with the guidance and support of Dr. Alan Delozier (University Archives and Special Collections) and Mr. Jack Kelly, a campus historian. A digital copy of the walking tour guidebook is held at the Seton Hall University Libraries Archives and Special Collections.

ESL@SetonHall is an intensive English program (IEP) with a strong academic focus. The program serves individuals who wish to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities to participate fully in United States postsecondary settings (e.g., university/college). Student Fridays are community events for ESL@SetonHall students to explore the campus, the South Orange community, and the New York City area beyond.
