ESL students provide their post-COVID travel recommendations  

Students enrolled in the ESLP 0120 Intermediate English class this semester were given a speaking presentation assignment: After COVID, what is your best recommendation for global travelers? The students designed and delivered oral presentations where they each identified a single destination they recommended for post-COVID travelers. The assignment, called the "Tourist Hot Spot Presentation", was first developed by Ms. Marsha Philemon, ESLP faculty and Manager of Institutional Printing/Student Technology Assistant Program

The students presented on three suggested travel destinations: Hokkaido (Japan), Taipei (Taiwan), and Beijing (China). The first location, introduced by student Ms. Chunju Shen, was Hokkaido. Hokkaido is a large region encompassing the northernmost island of Japan. Chunju, who is originally from Taiwan, notes that Japan is a convenient travel spot for people in Taiwan due to the close proximity. Chunju explains that Hokkaido is "the best place to travel because it is rich in natural beauty and suitable for travel in all four seasons". For a post-COVID trip, she recommends three essential itinerary items: (1) going skiing, (2) visiting a Japanese shrine, and (3) visiting Asahiyama Zoo.

The second location was Taipei, introduced by student Ms. Amber Huang. Taipei is the major metropolitan area and capital of Taiwan. Originally from the city of Taipei, Amber notes that "Taiwanese are quite friendly. When you need any help, Taiwanese will be happy to help you". Amber's recommended travel itinerary includes three important places: (1) Wanhua Lungshan Temple; (2) Taipei 101 Building; (3) Yangmingshan National Park.

The third travel destination was Beijing, the capital city of China and a major metropolitan area. Beijing was discussed by Ms. Emma Li, ESLP 0120 student and Beijing native. Emma shares that Beijing is "an imperial city with a history of thousands of years and yet is still a very modern city". Emma recommends three stops for your Beijing trip agenda: (1) The Temple of Heaven; (2) Beijing historic alleys (e.g., Gulou); and (3) Cultural performances (e.g., Peking opera and the National Center for the Performing Arts).

The academic-based ESL@SetonHall intensive English program prepares individuals for success in postsecondary undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. During morning coursework, students study reading, writing, listening, and speaking using academic materials. During afternoon coursework, students select from a range of elective classes including TOEFL Preparation, ESL All Skills, English for Specific Purposes, and Pronunciation Skills.
