CommArts Hosts Fall Graduate-level Information Sessions

Group of people doing work at a desk. This fall, Graduate Studies within the College of Communication and the Arts is offering a variety of online information sessions to prospective graduate students to learn about its graduate programs, the admissions process and other opportunities offered within the College.

"Our virtual series allows prospective students to directly engage with the College as they consider taking the next step in their pursuit of graduate-level studies," noted Brittany Scoles, Director, CASE and Graduate Administration. "Students can join a program-specific discussion or one of the special monthly topics sessions. Each one offers a personal snapshot of the College and gives students an opportunity to ask questions in real time."

Presented on a rotating basis, the College's special topic sessions focus on information most important to graduate students – upcoming sessions include:

  • Graduate Admissions 101 on Tuesday, November 2 at 5:30 p.m., which invites students to learn about the application process, offers tips and best practices for personal statement development and outlines important application deadlines
  • Graduate Student Experience Workshop on Wednesday, December 1 at 4 p.m., which focuses on the expectations of graduate school and how students’ individual academic backgrounds and interests might be a fit to pursue a graduate degree

"Connecting with College faculty and staff is a critical part of the decision-making process for prospective students when they are considering advanced degrees," said Ruth Tsuria, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Communication Program Director. "By engaging with them directly, students gain a tangible understanding of the graduate student experience and how it can benefit their interests."

These ongoing, webinar-style sessions began in Spring 2020, informed by frequently asked questions shared by students during events including Graduate Open House and new student orientation.

Museum Professions Faculty Associate and Program Director Gregory Stevens, M.A.T., emphasized the virtual events help students connect with like-minded colleagues and share industry-related career goals with one another.

"The sessions present a custom opportunity for students to establish a foundation for the next steps of their academic and professional careers," said Professor Stevens. "The best part is that every time, the sessions evolve because each cohort of attendees transforms the discussion with their diverse backgrounds and interests."

The College will continue to offer program-specific information sessions about its two graduate programs, M.A. in Museum Professions and M.A. in Communication, during which prospective students will be able to learn more about each individual program and engage with program directors.

Those who attend any of these virtual events will receive a $75 application fee waiver.
