NJDOE Certification

Within one year of completing an approved program that leads to certificate eligibility through the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), the Office of Fieldwork and Certification (OFC) submits qualified candidates through the NJEdCert online system. To initiate the nomination process, please follow the instructions below.

Of note, OFC strongly recommends graduates seek certification within one year of program completion to ensure eligibility. NJDOE certification requirements are subject to change. Students who do not apply for certification within one year of program completion may need to complete additional requirements to meet state standards. If more than one year has passed since program completion, see the information at the end of the page, as the application process will be different.

You can review eligibility requirements by certification type here.

Application Process for NJDOE Certification

Part I: Request nomination for certification

  1. Create an account in the NJEdCert portal if you do not yet have one. Use a personal email address (not your Seton Hall University address or other institutional email).

  2. During the designated application period, complete Seton Hall’s internal Nomination Request Form for NJDOE Certificates. You will receive the form link in an email from OFC. Include the email address that is associated with your NJEdCert account and check that all information is correct. Be sure to provide any required documentation as listed on the form.
      1. Application period:
        May 1-31 for May graduates
        August 1-31 for August graduates
        December 1-31 for December graduates

  3. Once your final grades have been posted on your transcript and the Registrar marks you as graduated on your final transcript (if in a degree program), the OFC submits your application for NJDOE certification to the state if you have met all requirements. The OFC cannot submit any nominations until your grades are posted and your degree is awarded by the Registrar, if applicable.

  4. Once your nomination is submitted through NJEdCert, you will receive an email from the NJDOE to accept your nomination and claim your certificate.

Part II: Retrieve your certificate after nomination submission

  1. Please check your email account and your spam/junk folder, if needed, for a message from [email protected] on behalf of NJDOE Certification ([email protected]). This message will list the NJDOE endorsements for which you have been nominated.

  2. Log into your NJEdCert account. Please follow the instructions to claim your nomination. The NJEdCert system allows candidates to pay the state directly.

  3. Once submitted, the NJDOE should automatically provide access to your NJDOE certification electronically (unless they require any additional information).

  4. To print your certification after it has been issued:
    1. Log into NJEdCert and go to My Certifications.
    2. Click the license ID number.
    3. In the right-hand corner, click View Printable View.
    4. Please note: It will not look like a traditional certificate, but rather a page with your certification details on it. If you have more than one certification, each will be listed separately.

If you experience technical issues (e.g., don't receive their emails, don't see your nomination, having difficulties with obtaining your certification, etc), reach out to technical support for the NJDOE. Find the Customer Service contact information here.

If you have questions, please contact us. We wish you success with the next steps in your professional journey!

Candidates Seeking Certification More than One Year After Program Completion.

Candidates applying for certification after the one-year nomination period need to initiate the application through NJEdCert. Please see the instructions and information here. After submission, OFC will receive a Verification of Program Completion (VOPC) to verify NJDOE-required information. Please note that eligibility is evaluated based on current state requirements, even if standards have changed since program completion.

Please be sure to enter the completed program and select Seton Hall University as the institution, so that your VOPC will be correctly sent to us. Do not manually enter another email address as the recipient.

Follow the instructions in the application to have your transcripts sent to the NJDOE. Please note that transcript requests are processed by the Office of the Registrar.
