Inside the Core, we are planning a series of events that are all linked in connection with the Core and the Catholic intellectual tradition in a wide variety of ways. I am using Inside the Core this week to give a brief overview of these fall events, so you can mark your calendar! More details on each of them will be forthcoming in posts closer to the dates.

  • Our Scholars’ Forum series, now beginning its sixth year, will start with an event we are supporting, not our traditional Teams-only presentation, but a special, in-person presentation hosted by Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. Pat Manning, Ph.D., M.T.S., M.Ed., of ICSST and a regularly teaching faculty member in the Core, as well as the director of the CAST Center, will discuss his latest book, Be Still and Know: Contemplative Practices for Christian Schools and Educators. The talk will be in the Seminary Chapel, with book-signing and refreshments, hosted by the seminary, to follow at 3:30-5:15 p.m., Tuesday, October 7, on Teams.

  • Our second Scholars’ Forum event (which will follow the usual format on Teams) will host Father Brian Muzas, associate professor of the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, speaking on his latest book, Presidents, Religions, and Nuclear Decisions (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2025) at 4 p.m., Tuesday, November 4, on Teams.

  • Our third Scholars’ Forum event will host Stacy Trasancos, Ph.D. faculty member in the CAST Program, as she discusses her latest book, IVF is Not the Way: The False Promises of Artificial Procreation (Sophia Institute Press, 2025) at 4 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, on Teams.

The Scholars’ Forum is co-sponsored by the University Core, the CAST Program, the CAST Center and Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology.

  • Besides our Scholars’ Forum events, the Core is partnering with Campus Ministry and the English Club, to screen the LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring in three approximately hour-long segments. Each event will begin with a faculty member giving brief opening remarks, showing the connections in the film (as well as in the text by J.R.R. Tolkien on which it is based) to Pope Francis’ important encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si (released ten years ago), after which we will view the segment of the film for that evening, followed by a time for further discussion, led by the faculty member. The LOTR film screenings will be on Tuesday evenings, from 6-9 p.m., on October 21, October 28 and November 4 in the Campus Ministry Lounge in Boland Hall. Popcorn and snacks will be provided!
  • Finally, Nursing and Core faculty member, Josephine DeVito, Ph.D., will give a presentation about her upcoming pilgrimage (in October) to the Marian shrines in Lourdes, France and Fatima, Portugal. Her talk, co-sponsored by the Core and Campus ministry, will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, December 1, in the Campus Ministry Lounge in Boland Hall.

Please join us for any or all of these events, and please spread the word!
