Monday, February 19, 2024
In December of 2022, the Tutoring Centers of Seton Hall were proudly awarded Level 1 International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC), by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). The Tutoring Centers of Seton Hall have now been awarded Level 2 certification as well! This certification empowers our departments to recognize and certify tutors as advanced practitioners. The Centers included in this certification are The Academic Resource Center, The Office of Academic Support for Student-Athletes, EOP, Resilience, Integrity, Scholarship, and Excellence (RISE) Program, The Math Learning Lab, and Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental.
For over three decades, the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) has stood at the forefront of promoting excellence in learning assistance, reading and academic support programs. With nearly 1,300 members and over 2,000 certified training programs globally, CRLA sets the gold standard for tutor training and professional development.
The Tutoring Centers have met CRLA’s stringent standards for tutor selection, training, direct service and evaluation. This achievement underscores our commitment to providing top-notch academic support to the students at Seton Hall University.
This outstanding accomplishment reflects not just a certification, but a dedication to professional development and an unwavering expertise in uplifting and supporting the academic journey of the students at Seton Hall University.
Kate Cochran, a senior, majoring in Environmental Studies and Diplomacy, explained the impact of being a tutor, "Tutoring has allowed me to meet all sorts of fantastic people - whether it is a student, a fellow tutor, or my amazing bosses. I have learned from them all and grown as a person throughout my three years at the ARC."
Grace Kershisnik, a peer tutor coordinator who is majoring in Biology and Philosophy said, "For me, being CRLA certified means that I can be confident that I have the necessary skills to help students to the best of my ability; I’m not going in blind as simply someone who has taken the same course, but as an individual who knows how to take my understanding and create a meaningful learning environment for someone else."
Ted McCulloch, program coordinator of the Academic Resource Center, explained the work behind the certification process, "The Seton Hall tutoring Consortium becoming certified in CRLA Levels I & II is a monumental achievement. Our team, led by Nicole Paternoster, worked tirelessly to get all of our tutors on board with the certification process with countless hours of planning and training. I am proud to say our tutors can offer academic support that reflects the gold standard for tutoring at the college level, which is a testament to their dedication to helping their fellow students achieve academic success."
Training for all tutoring staff is ongoing throughout the semester and offers opportunities for the tutors to explore best practices in academic assistance.
