Dr. Ann Marie Murphy Named Presidential Friend of Indonesia

Dr. Ann Marie Murphy, Assistant Professor at the Whitehead School of Diplomacy and
International Relations, was selected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic
of Indonesia and H.E. Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat, the Indonesian Ambassador to the
United States as the sole U.S. representative to the Presidential Friends of Indonesia
Conference. The conference recognizes scholars from 30 countries for their work in
disseminating information on Indonesia. The conference will take place 10-18 August,
and its itinerary will include invitations to formal Indonesia Independence Day celebrations
on 17 August, and a tour of Aceh, the site of the 2004 tsunami. The Conference will
take place in Jakarta at Bogor Presidential Palace.
Dr. Murphy's research interests include political development in Southeast Asia, international
relations in Asia, and U.S. foreign policy toward the countries of Southeast Asia.
She recently served as the Indonesia coordinator for a project on Muslim Professionals
in Southeast Asia commissioned by the National Bureau of Asian Research. During the
2006-2007 academic year, Dr. Murphy briefed Congressional staffers on U.S.-Indonesian
relations. She spoke at conferences organized by the Stanley Foundation, the Center
for Global Counter-Terrorism Cooperation, the United States-Indonesia Society, SAIS-Johns
Hopkins University, and the National Bureau of Asian Research.
Dr. Murphy monitored Indonesia's first direct presidential elections in July 2004
as a member of the Carter Center delegation. She was a member of the Freedom House
2005 ratings team and the Council on Foreign Relations Indonesia Commission. Dr. Murphy
has lectured at the Foreign Service Institute and has been a visiting scholar at the
Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Jakarta, and the Institute for Security
and International Studies, Bangkok. Dr. Murphy received her Ph.D. in Political Science
from Columbia University in 2002.
