Ambassador Williamson named Sharkey Scholar

The Whitehead School of Diplomacy and the United Nations Association of the USA recently announced the appointment of Ambassador Richard S.Williamson as the inaugural Thomas J. and Ruth Sharkey Distinguished Visiting Scholar of United Nations Studies. In 2004, Williamson became Ambassador and U.S. Representative to the UN Commission on Human Rights. He was also the U.S. Ambassador and Alternate Representative tothe U.N. for Special Political Affairs. His early government positionsincluded serving as Ronald Reagans' Assistant to the President forI nter governmental Affairs. Williamson later became the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs at the State Department. He is a partner in the international law firm of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP. Ambassador Williamson is the author of six books and over 100 articles examining a wide range of public policy issues.


As its first Sharkey Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Ambassador Williamson will participate in the intellectual life of the Whitehead School. In addition to hosting a series of international affairs lectures, his writing will appear in the Schools' Journal of Diplomacyas well as in publications of the UNA-USA. Ambassador Williamson will also take part in graduate and undergraduate classes as a guest lecturer and plans to consult with students on their research.


Its an honor to be the first Sharkey Scholar, says Ambassador Williamson. The School has an exciting environment that combines quality scholarship with opportunities for practical experience. I am delighted that 'I will have a chance to contribute to the growing community of the Whitehead School.'
