9/11 Survivor and Museum Professions Graduate Creates a Lasting Legacy

Gilda Healy HeadshotCollege of Communication and the Arts alumnae, lifelong New Jersey native and established entrepreneur Gilda Healy, starred in a recent documentary created by the Monmouth County Clerk's Office in honor of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. The film, Monmouth County, 9/11, and Its Aftermath, directed by Adam Worth, in partnership with the Monmouth County Historical Association with support from Monmouth University, recounted the experiences of Healy and other Monmouth County, NJ residents, impacted by the events of 9/11.

The documentary also saw the participation of widows, survivors, first responders, historians and government officials connected to the 9/11 attack. Moments before the attack, Healy reflected on what initially seemed like a "beautiful day" when she had just arrived at the office located in Tower 2, on the 36th floor. Shortly after arriving at her office, she witnessed an airplane making impact with Tower 1. Healy along with other occupants of the 36th floor quickly fled Tower 2, not long before witnessing another aircraft making impact with the tower she had just evacuated.

The events of that day, two decades later, are long remembered, especially by survivors like Healy, who often reflect on the day of the attack, while contemplating feelings of gratitude for having survived. "The events of that day are just a chapter in my story, my story didn't end there. I am lucky that I was able to move on from that experience," said Healy.

Gilda Healy with her HusbandSince that experience, Healy has moved on to excel in personal and professional arenas. Before attending Seton Hall, Healy acquired her insurance license and continued to work in the field while completing her graduate work at Seton Hall. After graduation in 2007, she later went on to establish her own business in 2014, Healy Brokerage, LLC, with her husband, Michael Healy.

The Brokerage currently serves to provide all kinds of insurance services for businesses, homes, bonds, among other establishments for the state of New York and New Jersey. Stemming from her M.A. in Museum Professions degree, the company also offers insurance and risk management for museums, fine art galleries and other non-profit organizations. To date, Healy has been in the insurance business for over 44 years.

Healy Brokerage, LLC is currently a member of the Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce along with fellow Seton Hall alumnae and B.A. in Liberal Studies recipient Kathrine Dwyer '19 with whom Healy has worked on insurance projects. Another successful Setonian, Dwyer is employed by Allstate in Colts Neck, N.J., as a producer and is a leading member of the Chamber's Young Professionals Group.

"My experience in the insurance business and my education at Seton Hall has served me well. I was able to develop a disaster recovery plan based on my insurance experience as part of my thesis," said Healy. Following the creation of her disaster recovery plan, she was awarded the New Jersey Meritorious Service Medal by the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for her work in dealing with Hurricane Sandy's devastation of the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey in Sea Girt, N.J.

Currently residing in Middletown, N.J., Healy remains dedicated to maintaining the legacy she has created with her husband as an entrepreneur. She continues to employ active civic involvement within her community and often reflects on fond memories of courses taken at the University that shaped her appreciation and understanding of art. She praises Seton Hall for giving her a "wonderful experience," one further underscored by the Alma Mater, an experience that continues to foster all of her dreams.
