Diplomacy and International Relations master’s alumna Lylian Pagan has distinguished herself in the political sphere. After graduating magna cum laude from New Jersey City University with a degree in National Security, she pursued a master’s degree at Seton Hall University, specializing in International Security and U.S. Foreign Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Using this knowledge, Lylian was offered a position on the Vetting Compliance and Research Team at the Democratic National Committee (DNC). In this role, she ensures that all campaign donations comply with SEC regulations while also vetting campaign rallies and public supporters. Additionally, her role involves ensuring that high-profile events and public appearances for key political figures proceed without disruptions.

Lylian’s path into her current role was guided by a seven-month fellowship that she was awarded by the Women’s Congressional Policy Institute on Women and Public Policy. During the fellowship, she served as a legislative aide to Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA), managing portfolios on foreign affairs, veterans’ issues, food safety, and defense issues. This role involved advising the Congressman, meeting with constituents, and drafting policy proposals. Seeking to broaden her experience, Lylian then transitioned to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security, where she contributed to the Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security. Her work included preparing speeches, researching witness testimony, and participating in site visits to U.S. Border Patrol and Homeland Security training centers. Before the end of the fellowship, she applied for a role at the DNC which led her to where she is today.

Prior to her fellowship, Lylian found and completed an internship with the help of the School of Diplomacy, at the World Affairs Council. She also participated in the U.S. Army War College Negotiations Simulator and became a member of the John Quincy Adams Society. These experiences not only honed her skills but also expanded her professional network, leading to her fellowship and current role at the DNC.

Reflecting on her professional journey, Lylian emphasizes the importance of precision and attention to detail, and notes that these qualities are vital to success on Capitol Hill. She also notes that courses in the School of Diplomacy which focused on the causes of war helped her understand policy and how it affects the American people.

For those aspiring to pursue a career in politics or national security, Lylian’s advice to current students is to create a LinkedIn profile, speak with professors about what your goals are post-graduation, and don’t be afraid to get involved with something out of your comfort zone. With hard work and dedication, and guidance from the School of Diplomacy, Lylian has found success in U.S. politics, and in the DNC.
