Dr. Joseph Rice Presents at Oxford Symposium  

With responsible Christian stewardship rightly perceived as an increasingly important issue, the Las Casas Institute of Blackfriars Hall at the University of Oxford recently held a symposium on the topic Homo Curator: The Ethics of Consumption. Seton Hall University is proud to be home to Joseph Rice, Ph.D., a scholar who was an invited presenter at this symposium, part of the celebration of the 800th anniversary of Blackfriars at Oxford.

Dr. Rice, Associate Professor of Philosophical Theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology and Adjunct Professor in the Catholic Studies Program/Department, is a classically-trained specialist in the philosophical thought of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II). His Las Casas Institute symposium paper, "A Deeper Humanity: The Family as the School of an Inclusive Economy," allowed him to further explore issues on which he has previously presented and published internationally: the ethics of globalization, of marriage and the family, and of the experience of conscience as related to self-constitution.

The private symposium, which was held through Zoom from April 19-April 21, 2021, featured presentations by 12 scholars from Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States. Dr. Rice participated on a panel with Sr. Laura Sarota Baritz, OP, of Hungary, whose doctoral studies focused on an alternative ethics model based on virtue ethics, and Dr. Stefano Zamagni, President of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

"Dr. Rice is known internationally for his scholarship and his unique ability to make the practical applications of philosophy and theology clear," said Dr. Ines Murzaku, Chair of the Catholic Studies Program/Department. "Our Catholic Studies students are very fortunate to have the opportunity to take his Search for Human Fulfillment course. We also appreciate being able to call on Dr. Rice for our own symposia and conferences, as he lends a unique perspective, informed by his international experiences and wide-ranging expertise."

The papers presented at this symposium are scheduled to be published in a volume by Springer, as the sixth volume of the Las Casas Institute's Virtues and Economics Series.
