Seton Hall Alumnus Helps Students Find Success in Careers at Charles Schwab

Image of Bethany HallThanks to the vision of a Seton Hall alumnus, a thriving partnership between Seton Hall and Charles Schwab has opened doors for students over the past four years.

Charles Schwab, a financial services company, has been partnering with the Career Center since Frank DeVito, a branch manager at the Flatiron Branch, made the connection.

DeVito, who graduated from Seton Hall in 2014 with a bachelor’s in finance and management, is also a legacy Pirate — his mother, father and sister all graduated from Seton Hall. “Seton Hall [is] fully in my blood, in a few different areas — not just the Stillman School of Business, but also the Athletic Department as well,” DeVito said.

Because of his connection to the university, he said he wanted to create a mutually beneficial partnership between Charles Schwab and Seton Hall. “I find Seton Hall students are extremely coachable, extremely inquisitive as well, where they want to learn, they want to get better,” DeVito said. “They want to make a difference and I'd say that ties hand-in-hand with Schwab's core belief of seeing through the client's eyes.”

DeVito began the partnership by reaching out to Mark Schild, associate dean of student success in the Stillman School of Business, and Christine Milano, assistant director of the Career Center. “We kind of just said, ‘Hey, how can we both help each other?’” DeVito said.

DeVito, in speaking with Schild and Joyce Strawser, dean and associate professor of accounting and taxation in the Stillman School of Business, said that he was interested in the wealth management minor that students were graduating with because it gave them the opportunity to start working toward their CFP®.

“I’m a product of Seton Hall. I’m a product of the Stillman School,” DeVito said. “I know the quality that goes in, behind the scenes. I’d be silly to not tap into some of that talent in my role now as a branch manager at Charles Schwab.”

Charles Schwab is an active participant within the Career Center’s semesterly career fairs, networking panels and guest speaker forums. They have also participated in the Pathfinder’s Job Shadowing Program, which allows students to shadow offices and teams of any participating company. Schwab also hosts Seton Hall students to shadow their branch offices.

DeVito not only wanted to create this partnership because of his own connections to the university, but because he said he sees himself as a mentor to students. “I was on their path at one time… and the way I look at it, there were people during my time at Seton Hall that helped me along,” DeVito said. “I can… pay it forward.”

Mentorship is what DeVito credits as something that has helped him graduate and have success early on in his career. “I know I wouldn't be where I am today, as quick as I am, as quick as it's been, without mentors,” DeVito said. “I'm happy to be a mentor to students at Seton Hall.”

As far as advice for students, DeVito noted,

It's important to get your foot in the door. Don't be afraid to get out of your shell a little bit, network, shake hands and learn. You're going to make mistakes and something I always say is you either win or you learn.
