Writing Center

Mission

The purpose of the Seton Hall University Writing Center is to provide support for all students, staff, and faculty who require assistance with writing. Though the Writing Center commits a great deal of its resources to the First-Year Writing Program, we are open to anyone who is affiliated with the University - alumni, current students, faculty, administrators, and staff. Students taking basic skills or linked 1201 classes are typically required to attend six (6) sessions at the Writing Center during the semester. Learn More »

Location & Hours

The Writing Center will be totally online in its operations in the fall semester of 2020 following the decision of the University in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Writing Center will open on the Monday after the last day of Add/Drop. It will open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.  It will remain closed on weekends.

Appointments:  Students can make tutoring appointments by logging on PirateNet and clicking on COMPASS. They will then choose "Tutoring"; "Writing Center"; and will be directed to a schedule of all Writing Center tutors from which they can choose their preferred time and tutor.

The Writing Center will have two options for online operations, Microsoft Teams and Email-based tutoring, and each option will be determined between the tutor and tutee.  There will be two types of shifts for tutors, appointments and “walk-in”, and tutors will self-identify these on their Compass tutoring schedules.

Once the University determines the date for the return of all Student Services on campus, the Writing Center will re-open in its physical location which is Walsh Library in Rooms #304, 310 and 316. Visitors should take a left turn after the stairs or elevator and then take another left to follow the signs to the Center.

At the end of the Fall and Spring semesters, during reading days and final exams, the Writing Center is open for drop-in appointments only, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each weekday.
