Noise and Quiet Hours Policy

Purpose

This policy establishes the rights resident students have in regards to undue noise and defines courtesy and quiet hours.

Definitions

Courtesy hours: During all hours of the day, students are expected to be considerate of other students' individual needs.

Quiet hours: established hours during the morning and night when students must refrain from unnecessary and excessive noise. See below for specific times.

Noise: sound that can be heard outside of a room or suite that is intrusive or impacts other community members

Policy

Noise, particularly sustained, must not be readily audible within the private living quarters of other students. Instruments or amplification devices producing excessive volume, including, but not limited to subwoofers, are prohibited in the residence halls outside of designated practice rooms. Sustained, loud noise originating outdoors but audible within residence halls or other University buildings will not be allowed. Noise emanating from within one hall must not be audible within any other hall or University building. The general noise level within the hall must be such that it does not interfere with the above-mentioned rights.

Specific Hours and Times

  • Courtesy hours are in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Quiet Hours are in effect, Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • Quiet Hours are in effect on Friday and Saturday from 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • 24-hour Quiet Hours are in effect during reading day and exam periods.
