Lost Key Policy

Purpose

To provide information on when a resident student loses the room key to which they are assigned. This details the policy found in the Housing License Agreement signed by all resident students.

Scope

Housing and Residence Life Policy

Definitions

lock change is when a resident student loses or misplaces a room key in which they are assigned. A change of locks then occurs through Seton Hall University Facilities Engineering.

Policy

A resident student who misplaces or loses the room key to which they are assigned will have 48 hours (or on the Housing staff member’s discretion) to locate the lost/misplaced key. They must report that they lost the key immediately to a Housing staff member. The Housing staff member will provide a temporary room key to the resident student. This key must be returned within the designated time frame if the original key is found or once the lock change occurs. A temporary room key is not a supplement for the original key.

If the key is not found within the above-mentioned time frame a lock change will occur, and the responsible resident student will be charged $108.00 to their Seton Hall University Bursar account. This charge is determined by Seton Hall University Facilities Engineering.

A lock change requires that all locks are changed based on the specific room style including suites or apartments. If a resident student in the suite/apartment loses a key, the locks are changed for every room within that suite or apartment including the suite/apartment front door.
