Early Arrival and Break Housing Policy
Purpose
The Early Arrival and Break Housing Policy allows for students who are given permission to remain in campus housing outside of the stated beginning and end dates for each semester to do so and to be pay the stated fee.
Scope
Student Services/Divisional Policy
Definitions
Resident Student: Seton Hall student who has signed license agreement and is assigned
to a specific room in a residence hall.
Early Arrival: That period of time prior to move-in date of the semester for a resident
student published by the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
Break Period: That period of time when the Department of Housing and Residence Life has published the Halls as closed for the fall semester (generally by 5pm the day after the last final exam) and the published date for the Halls to open for the Spring semester.
Policy
Resident Students are not permitted to move into the Halls prior to the published move-in date or remain in Halls during the Break Period unless one of the following conditions apply:
1. The student is required to be in residence/on campus due to their position/participation in a University activity. In this instance the sponsoring University department will make arrangements with the Department of Housing and Residence Life and assume responsibility for the student(s). The sponsoring Department may also be responsible for any associated costs (i.e., Securitas, staffing). OR
2. The student applies for and is approved for Early Arrival or Break Housing. The student will be responsible for a daily fee for housing and for board if applicable. The fee will be applied to the student’s account. The University will set the fee each year based upon the standard room rate. The fee will be shared with students in advance of their decision to accept the offer Early Arrival or Break Housing.
- The student will not be approved if they are not in good social standing with the University.
- Students living in all halls, other than Ora and Turrell, are also required to pay the fee board when the cafeteria is open.
In consultation with Facilities and Engineering, the Department of Housing and Residence Life will determine the date which Halls will open prior to each semester. As a result, even if a student is approved for Early Arrival Housing, they may not be able to stay in their assigned room.
The Department of Housing and Residence Life will determine which Halls will remain open during the Break Period. The Halls which remain open generally are Boland, Xavier, Turrell, and Ora. While the University reserves the right to change the Halls which remain open, students planning to request Break Housing are strongly encouraged to select one of those Halls for their regular housing assignment.
Students approved for Break Housing who do not live in one of the Break Period open Halls will have to relocate to an open space in an open Hall. If no open spaces are available, the student’s request to remain on campus during the Break Period will not be accommodated. Spaces will be assigned on a priority basis beginning with students who are required to be present on campus due to their position/participation in a University activity. The Department of Housing and Residence Life will determine priority beyond that.
Students are not permitted to have Guests or Visitors during Early Arrival or Break Period Housing.
Students are required to abide by all University rules and regulations while in residence, including but not limited to the Student Code of Conduct.
