Seton Hall University Announces New Academic Home for its Master of Healthcare Administration Program
Friday, March 21, 2014
Seton Hall University announced on March 7, 2014, that its Master of Healthcare Administration (M.H.A.) program will be administered by the University's School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS), effective July 1, 2014. Currently, the M.H.A. program is administered by the College of Arts and Sciences. The SHMS Department of Interprofessional Health Sciences and Health Administration (to be re-named as such effective July 1, currently it is the Department of Graduate Programs in Health Sciences) will house the M.H.A. program, in addition to its current Ph.D. in Health Sciences program.
"The Master of Healthcare Administration degree program at Seton Hall University is a thriving program that educates present and future healthcare leaders on the complexities of our modern healthcare industry," said Dr. Larry A. Robinson, Provost and Executive Vice President. "The M.H.A. program's new academic home in the School of Health and Medical Sciences will be the springboard for growth and progress, thus adding to the value of the degrees our graduate students receive, while also complementing our University's vision to be a home for the mind, the heart and the spirit."
The transition of the M.H.A. program, which offers both on-campus and online delivery formats, to the School of Health and Medical Sciences will enhance student learning opportunities and outcomes, as well as foster interprofessional collaborations throughout the School's two divisions. The Division of Health Sciences includes professional graduate education programs in Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant and Speech-Language Pathology and the post-professional PhD in Health Sciences program. The Division of Medical Residencies and Fellowships offers educational opportunities for post-medical school physicians in specialty areas at several regional hospitals.
"In response to the ever-changing landscape of healthcare, the acquisition of the M.H.A. program is a natural fit within our current health sciences graduate program inventory and our plans to increase and enhance our degree offerings in the future," said Brian B. Shulman, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Health and Medical Sciences. The 42-credit program is the only Master of Healthcare Administration program in New Jersey, enrolling more than 100 students each year in its online and on-campus formats. Key topics of study include healthcare finance, healthcare ethics, healthcare economics, healthcare management and legal issues in healthcare. Faculty collaborate with seasoned healthcare executives and practitioners to add real-word experiences into the curriculum, and students complete rigorous internships. The M.H.A. program is a candidate for initial national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).
With
the transition of the M.H.A. program, the SHMS Department of Interprofessional
Health Sciences and Health Administration will become one of New Jersey's
foremost providers of comprehensive healthcare leadership education. Many
alumni from the M.H.A. and Ph.D. programs already hold senior leadership
positions throughout the region. For example, Daniel Messina, Ph.D., a 2005
graduate, is the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of
CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, NJ, and Lydia Stockman, M.H.A., a 2011
graduate, is the
Assistant Vice President of Operations at Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. The department also regularly hosts hospital
CEOs on the South Orange campus for networking events in partnership with the
American College of Healthcare Executives–New Jersey.
The
School of Health and Medical Sciences is accepting applications for the M.H.A.
program for the upcoming Fall 2014 semester. More information is available here »
