The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute Takes Students to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York

Federal Reserve Bank TripOn Tuesday September 26th, 2023 members, scholars and accompanied guests of the Joseph Ana. Unanue Latino Institute of Seton Hall University went on a trip to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This trip was an opportunity that the Latino Institute presented to its scholars and all students on Campus to get to visit what we learned is the Bank of our Banks; with this opportunity we got to see with our own eyes how the banking system works for the banks, where the money supply comes from, how the Federal Reserve makes sure our banks have enough money to hold for their clients, and we got to see where the decisions are made that impact our everyday Economic activity. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is located in the Financial District of Manhattan in New York City and is one of the buildings located throughout the nation for the Federal Reserve bank of the United States which is the nation’s Central Bank and where the money supply comes from. While we were at the Federal Reserve in New York we received a tour of many different parts of the building where we learned about how they store the money that will be delivered to the banks, specific details about the dollar bill, how the Federal Reserve deals with inflations, the history of the federal reserve and how they keep gold reserves stored. The staff from the Federal Reserve even let us go home with a souvenir of a small bag of shredded money from previous years.

After our tour of the Federal Reserve Bank we went into a room and got to network with a wonderful group of panelists who informed us about their stories from where they are from, where they went to school, what they majored in while attending College, how they ended up in the Federal Reserve and what their job is in the Federal Reserve. The panelists were really eager to speak and connect with us specially because some of them started as interns while they were in their undergraduate years. They informed us about all sorts of opportunities that exist for College students at the Federal Reserve, and they appealed to all of us knowing that we all come from different backgrounds and fields of study.

One of the Panelists was Erika S. Ota-Liedtke who works at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as the Data Governance Specialist and was present during the Joseph Ana. Unanue Latino Institute Scholarly Induction and gave a speech congratulating the scholars for their hard work. A lunch was provided for us and was included as part of the networking session that we had with the panelists. During the networking session the panelists informed us about different internship opportunities they had open for the summer. Erika herself attended Seton Hall University during her undergraduate years and was involved with the Latino Institute. After our lunch and networking with the panelists our trip at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York ended.

Overall the trip to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York was more than just a one day trip to New York, it represented the various opportunities and connections that the Joseph Ana. Unanue Latino Institute of Seton Hall University has to offer for students on campus. Students of all backgrounds and fields of study are welcome to communicate with the Latino Institute on Campus to learn about the different opportunities and professionals that they can provide you with. Whatever your major or career aspirations are, the Latino Institute has something insightful for you.
