Love Thy Neighbor: DOVE Haiti Earthquake Relief
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the island of Haiti on August 14, 2021, causing over 2,000 casualties and immense destruction.
The Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) has cherished its relationship with the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Hinche, Haiti since 2007. Hundreds of Seton Hall students and alumni have traveled to Maison Fortune, forming lasting bonds with the children who are housed, fed, and educated there.
Following the August earthquake, the Maison Fortune Orphanage stands ready to accept newly orphaned children. Political unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic had already caused a dire need for our friends in Haiti who suffer the effects of poverty and food insecurity.
Just one week after the earthquake, founder of Maison Fortune Orphanage, Jean Louis LeFort, determined that it was not enough to simply stay and wait for new children. He formed a team of eight ambassadors to Les Cayes, including five resident students. They took their campus transport van and loaded it full of supplies. While there, they distributed rice, beans, clothing, small toys and lots of smiles and goodwill. They will continue to return to the affected region as often as they can afford to obtain needed supplies.
The significance of this outreach is crucial at this point in history. The opportunity that MFO has created for Haitians to provide aid to other Haitians is rare, fragile, and necessary. Lasting change that can be made within the country of Haiti starts here; supporting the leadership of Haiti's own youth that will develop a deep sense of pride and instill hope for the country's future.
DOVE is committed to supporting the outreach of MFO, in addition to providing new beds, food and protection for the additional children to whom Maison Fortune Orphanage will open their doors.
