Unleash the Power of Persuasion through Workshop Series

"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done, because he wants to do it."
– Dwight D. Eisenhower

They call it "the art of persuasion." Often, the key to success in your career and beyond depends on your ability to master that art. But how do you persuade them to do what you want, while ensuring that their needs are satisfied?

This question and others are at the forefront of Seton Hall University's Strategic Influencing and Communication Series of Workshops, offered by the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. Through these highly interactive workshops, students observe, participate in and analyze different situations and design appropriate strategies to achieve goals and maximize outcomes. They practice building consensus within and across teams and learn how to exercise subtle influence without resistance.

Lee Miller speaks in front of class

Lee E. Miller has been called the "high priest of the give and take art" and has taught countless professionals how to motivate others to get what they want.

Each workshop is led by Lee E. Miller, professor of management in the Stillman School of Business and a consultant, executive/career coach and corporate trainer in the fields of leadership, influencing and negotiating. He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating, which was selected by the Huffington Post as one of the "16 Books Aspiring Woman Leaders Need to be Reading." His other book, Up Influence, Power and the U Perspective: The Art of Getting What You Want, was reviewed recently by Forbes.com, noting the intersection of "Convince, Collaborate and Create" as a powerful framework.

The Spring 2020 Strategic Influencing and Communication schedule is as follows:

Students begin by taking Strategic Influencing and Communication, either the standard version or the version designed specifically for women. If they so choose, they may then take Advanced Strategic Influencing and Communication, which is open only to those who have taken the basic workshop.

Through Strategic Influencing and Communication, students begin to understand and approach influencing in a systematic way, being aware of the context in which influencing takes place and how the roles of individuals and other factors can determine outcomes. Strategic Influencing and Communication for Women is designed specifically to teach women to think about influencing differently and to approach efforts to influence others in a thoughtful, systematic way. The program provides the key essentials of influencing as well as how effective application of these skills differs for women and men.

Through Advanced Strategic Influencing and Communication, students learn how to influence groups and navigate organizational politic. Participants will learn to develop an influencing plan while considering the roles of various players in the decision-making process and building on the skills developed in the prerequisite workshop. They will also have the opportunity to observe, participate, and ask questions to improve their influencing skills and to learn from real life practical examples. They will explore and perform small group exercises, thereby practicing and mastering various influencing skills.
