2019 Commencement Speaker
Bob's 40-year career at ESPN, including 28 years as host of the investigative series "Outside the Lines," has vaulted him into the upper echelon of American sports journalists. In addition to multiple Emmy Awards, the show received a Peabody Award in 2014 for its coverage of the NFL concussion crisis.
Away from the camera, Bob devotes his time and talent to several worthy causes. His lifelong relationship with Seton Hall includes sharing his professional insight with students, serving on the Board of Regents, and strengthening his alma mater through personal philanthropy.
"What I learned here gave me the tools and the grounding to not only work in the industry, but to help create programming that's essentially become a part of the wider culture," he said in November while teaching a sports journalism master class on campus.
Bob received a bachelor's degree in communication magna cum laude from Seton Hall and got his start as a sportscaster and program director at WSOU, the University's student-run radio station. He was inducted into the WSOU Hall of Fame in 1995.
He was selected in December to join the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame and is awaiting formal induction on June 24. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Connecticut and have two daughters and two grandchildren.
Bob's reputation for professionalism and passion for servant leadership are guide stars for our students as they begin their careers. I am confident his commencement address will be rich in wisdom and insight for all of our graduates.
