About the event:
Leading readers on an imaginative, faith-based journey from desolation to salvation, Dante relies on and enhances many cultural elements from Christian and pre-Christian history—Biblical figures, Classical philosophy, and aesthetics, to name a few. "The importance of Dante's Divine Comedy in Western culture cannot be overstated," said Ines Murzaku, PhD, Chair of Catholic Studies. "Through his masterful synthesis of this journey of faith, Dante made incredible contributions to the way we view our world and our path to salvation. It is only fitting that we should mark the septicentennial of his death by exploring a crucial element in his spiritual journey: the Psalms."
Prepared in response to a request for a biblical scholar's commemoration of Dante, Dr. Glazov's presentation will report on Dante's illumination of the role that the Psalms play in Dante's spiritual journey, e.g., in escaping hell via the petition for mercy, and in ascending to Paradise by the use of praise and jubilation to express ineffable joy.
The event is co-sponsored by the University Core and the Center for Catholic Studies. For more information about this event, please contact Gloria Aroneo, MBA, at [email protected] or (973) 275-2808
