EmpowerHer: Roundtable discussions With Professional Women

Women at a roundtable discussion.Seton Hall’s Career Center is proud to have collaborated with Lambda Eta Pi, PRSSA, the Women and Gender Studies Program, and The Women’s Network to present EmpowerHer. This event took place on March 21, 2024, in Bethany Hall. Students, alumni, staff and employers came together to discuss issues women face in the workplace and how to overcome these barriers.

The speakers acted as discussion leaders at their respective tables. Attendees had a chance to converse with each speaker for 15-20 minutes before moving onto another table. As the rounds went on, students asked questions about topics such as how to feel more confident in the workplace, how to find a mentor, and when and how to ask for help. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a discussion with each of the seven speakers at their respective tables.

Junior criminal justice and psychology major Sofie Palumbo had many topics she was eager to discuss but was most excited to be able to talk with these professional women. "As someone who is going into a field where women are not very visible, it’s nice to have the opportunity to ask women who are in these fields what their experiences are so we can learn from them," Palumbo says.

"For me, my personal motto is mother and mentor to many," said Darlene Flagg, vice president of the National Life Group and Seton Hall alumna. "What I really enjoy doing is getting men or women to their next level." She spoke passionately of her experiences and emphasized the importance of making new connections-something this event brought her the perfect opportunity to do.

Once the rounds concluded, the open discussion portion of the evening began. Students and professionals mingled and continued building connections with each other. Director of EEO Compliance and the Title IX Coordinator at Seton Hall, Toni Hindsman wanted participants, especially young women, to walk away with this in mind: "Don’t let anyone make you feel as if you’re less than: you are already valued."

A special thank you goes to all our discussion leaders: Lydiette Diaz, Darlene Flagg, Toni Hindsman, Allison McGeary, Ashley I. Robinson, Special Agent Mayra Rodriguez, and Allison Wright.
