What Great Minds Can Do: Angeli Fernandes

"Freshman year, I took a sound engineering class and loved it. I told my professor I was interested in learning more in the field, so he called his friend at the Metropolitan Opera. The next morning, he told me I had an internship there. It was awesome to have a professor looking out for me like that."

Photo of Angeli FernandesAngeli Fernandes is a quintessential overachiever, and at Seton Hall she was able to pursue everything she wanted. She participated in the University honors program as well as the business leadership program. Besides that, she had two minors in addition to her major. But Angeli was also able to explore her passion for music. She got the lead in Little Women as a freshman, sang in both the Chamber and University choirs, performed at Carnegie Hall and sang at an opera house in New York City. "The ability to have all these varied experiences would not have happened anywhere else."

Four internships were also part of Angeli's Seton Hall experience. "Freshman year, I took a sound engineering class and loved it. I told my professor I was interested in learning more in the field, so he called his friend at the Metropolitan Opera. The next morning, he told me I had an internship there. It was awesome to have a professor looking out for me like that."

A research internship at the Kessler Rehabilitation Center that focused on treating multiple sclerosis patients with virtual reality technology allowed her to combine her interest in medicine with technology — and landed her a research position after graduation.

She was chosen as one of only a handful of students nationwide to attend a Conference for Leaders of Character at the U.S. Military Academy. "It was inspiring to interact with students from Ivy League schools and from all over the world. We got to discuss important issues and learn how we can be a part of the solution in society."

Angeli exemplifies what it means to be a servant leader. She led a mission trip to Detroit and spent six weeks in India volunteering with disabled children. "The India experience opened my eyes to the need and poverty in the world and made me realize how much I want to help people."

One of the things that drew Angeli to Seton Hall University was her faith. "I love that Seton Hall is a Catholic university; it allowed me to explore and deepen my faith. I also love walking across campus and knowing that I can stop in the chapel or have lunch with Father Brian. Most of all, I love that this is a community where everyone really cares and wants to support you. They want see you do your best."
