He began his extensive education in art at the Newark School for Fine and Industrial Arts where he held the post of director between 1946 and 1954. After attending the Newark School, he went on to New York's Grand Central Academy, before becoming a pupil of Robert Brackman's at the Art Students League. He completed his artistic education as a private student of John Grabach. Gasser has had an exceptionally successful career exhibiting in the United States and abroad.
