My research focuses on rethinking museum theory and museum ethics to meet the changing
needs of museums and society. In my 2005 edited volume "New Museum Theory and Practice:
An Introduction" I collaborated with an international group of scholars and practitioners
to raise critical questions about the construction of truth, knowledge and identity
in museums. More recently, as Founder and Director of the Institute of Museum Ethics
at Seton Hall, I have pursued a research agenda that promotes transparency, accountability
and social responsibility in the museum. I am currently editing "Routledge Companion
to Museum Ethics: Redefining Ethics for the Twenty-First Century Museum," a 27-chapter
volume of new essays that examines the ways in which recent social, economic, political,
and technological shifts have presented ethical challenges and opportunities across
all areas of museum activity. I also study how contemporary artists can move organizational
ethics forward in the museum.
