This past week the Pirate Battalion ROTC program participated in a number of events during its Salute to Service week in order to honor those who have served the nation. The Pirate Battalion started its week of events by participating in a flag-raising ceremony organized by the Montclair Veteran Student Association (MVSA). The ceremony served as a symbolic gesture, resonating with the spirit of patriotism and camaraderie. The sight of the flag ascending amidst a backdrop of crisp blue skies and fluttering leaves created a solemn atmosphere, reminding everyone of the significance of honoring those who have served in the military. Afterwards members of the battalion joined the attending servicemembers and event organizers for a veterans’ lunch.

The partnership between the Pirate Battalion and the MVSA showcased the collaborative spirit within the university community. It underscored the importance of recognizing the unique challenges faced by military students and veterans, fostering an environment of understanding and support. The flag-raising ceremony became a visual representation of unity, transcending differences, and highlighting the shared respect for those who have served their country.

Continuing their commitment to community outreach, the Pirate Battalion participated in a Veterans Day program hosted by the FBI’s Newark field office. This event provided an opportunity for students to interact with representatives from the FBI and veterans, gaining insights into the diverse roles and responsibilities within the organization. The event with the FBI not only broadened the horizons of the participating students but also reinforced the idea that military training and skills are transferable to various professional fields.

Salute to Service week continued with the annual Veterans Day event at Triton Regional High School. Pirate Battalion cadre even had the opportunity to meet up with a Pirate Battalion alum, 2LT Legenski! Participating in this event allowed the battalion to extend its reach beyond the university campus, connecting with the broader community. The high school setting provided a platform for the battalion to share experiences, offer insights into military life, and forge connections with younger generations. Through presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions, the battalion members contributed to fostering a deeper understanding of the military among high school students.

One of the highlights of the week was a moderated discussion with Jermon Bafaty, founder and CEO of Platinum Technologies, hosted by the Pirate Battalion and the Stillman School of Business. Mr. Bafaty's journey and insights resonated with the military students, offering a unique perspective on leadership, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. The event served as an invaluable opportunity for the Pirate Battalion members to learn from a successful entrepreneur, drawing parallels between military discipline and the business world. Mr. Bafaty's presence underscored the importance of bridging the gap between military experiences and civilian pursuits, inspiring the students to leverage their skills in diverse professional endeavors.

In another noteworthy collaboration this past week, the Pirate Battalion joined hands with Thy and Jimmy Cavagnaro, founders of the Vietnam Veterans Barnegat organization. This partnership reflected a commitment to honoring and supporting veterans from different eras, fostering a sense of continuity and shared purpose. Through joint events, discussions, and initiatives, the partnership aimed to create a supportive network for veterans, acknowledging their contributions and addressing their unique needs.
