Seton Hall Law Welcomes William Coppola, as the New Distinguished Practitioner in Residence for the Gibbons Institute for Law, Science & Technology

Mr. William Coppola joins Seton Hall Law as the Gibbons Institute for Law, Science & Technology Distinguished Practitioner in Residence. Seton Hall Law enthusiastically welcomes Bill and his extensive experience in patent, intellectual property, and transaction matters to enrich the student experience and intellectual property legal learning community. As a graduate of the Class of 1991, Mr. Coppola sat in the same lectures, considering some of the very same choices and questions about his future and career. In his role, Bill will be collaborating with the student body and providing them with a bespoke advising experience. He is an experienced advisor providing counsel to numerous clients, including universities and research institutions. He will also be teaching a highly anticipated new elective course called, "IP in the Pharma/Biotech Industry" this coming Spring 2024 semester.
Bill has been an accomplished patent attorney amassing a tremendous amount of experience in the legal biotech and pharma space. He has secured and defended world-wide patent protection for chemical, biotechnology and device inventions, litigation of chemical, biotechnology and device patents in the US and globally (including Hatch-Waxman litigations in the US, and PMNOC litigations in Canada).
Drawing upon Bill’s extensive knowledge and achievements, he will present a special lecture on licensing, which the extended Seton Hall community will be invited to attend. "Alums like Bill represent our greatest resource," said Prof. David Opderbeck, Co-Director of the Gibbons Institute. "We look forward to learning from Bill’s long expertise and deep experience as we continue to push our intellectual property and technology programs into new territories," Prof. Opderbeck said.
Mr. Coppola holds a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. He received a graduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of South Florida, and an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Delaware. He is a registered patent attorney who is admitted to practice law in New Jersey, New York, Florida, and the District of Columbia. He is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor society and an Eagle Scout.
